one more question! common colds and UC
      #30400 - 12/07/03 08:45 AM

I forgot, I wanted to ask one more thing. Just after this flare up started (my first, since I've only had UC for like 3 months now), I had taken a flight to visit my brother and sister for a much needed vacation. During my four days away, the colitis flare up starting going away (almost had a decent BM on the last day there!). Anyway, on the flight back, I caught some mild stomach bug or something (just in time for thanksgiving....). Well that stomach bug (I know it was different from the colitis, because it came with other symptoms) went away quickly, and a few days AFTER turkey day, I caught a cold which is barely leaving me now. Since catching that stomach bug, the flare up came back strong and I've been dealing with it and other maladies at the same time.

How do things like the flu and the cold affect UC? All the violent coughing and hacking can't be good for my insides while I'm on a flare up. Is it known to make things worse?

Actually, some believe that the common flu (i.e. the one you get the shot for, not the stomach bug) is a cause of flare ups in IBDers. Stomach illnesses like the one you described can also be a reason for a flare in some. You may find you have more colds as well as your immune system is a bit busy now attacking your intestines rather than doing what it is supposed to be doing.
