I am a (relatively) newly diagnosed diabetic who also suffers from IBS & polycystic ovarian syndrome. This means I can only eat foods that are suitable for an IBS sufferer, have a low GL/GI, and are low in fat! Does anyone know of any recipe books/recipe websites that would offer reputable- and delicious- recipes or food options for someone like me? Sometimes I get so desperate to taste something delicious, that I eat something that is detrimental to one or the other (or all) conditions & end up regretting it for days...I'm not a very patient cook, but I think if i could find some good recipes, I would give it a go. Thanks!

I don't know of another Website, but you may be able to find some suitable recipes on this one.

The recipes in the Recipe Index here are suitable for IBSers following the EFI Guidelines, which means most are low in fat (25% of calories from fat or less). The big exceptions to the 25% rule are some desserts which are meant to be eaten after a low fat, high soluble fiber meal.

I'm not sure what low GL means, but I assume low GI means low glycemic index. This has come up before on the Diet Board - you can do a Search on that Board for glycemic and another one for diabetes and see what pops out. You can also cruise through the Recipe Index and see if any of the recipes sound like they'd use low GI foods or, if you're looking for recipes with a particular food in them (like brown rice, for example), you can Search the Recipe Board for recipes with those foods.

I've seen other posts on the Board from people with PCOS, so you can search for that, too, to see if you find any helpful suggestions. For that, I would Search the Diet Board and the Living Room Board and do multiple searches with a variety of keywords - PCOS, ovarian, polycyst - to pick up entries with abbreviations and those with variant spellings.

You can also search Heather's Website outside the Boards for information on the EFI Diet and diabetes. To do that, enter the word you want to search for (diabetes, for example) in the white search box at the top right-hand corner of this page, above the pink hearts and flowers border, to the left of the black and yellow "Search" button. Here are two links that popped out when I tried that:

FAQ

I hope this helps somewhat. You could also try posting on the Diet Board, asking if there are any other people with diabetes on the Board these days. If you do that, it's helpful to list what your IBS symptoms are: diarrhea, constipation, alternating, pain.

Take care.

Hi!

My husband has diabetes, so he's always trying to find something that works for both him and me. We've found that grilled fish and vegetables is something we can both handle (if he's on a broccoli/cauliflower craze, I'll have a Beano with dinner). Chicken (grilled/roasted/in sausages) is another good source of protein for both of us, and we can both tolerate sourdough or "country wheat" bread.

My suggestion would be to look through Eating For IBS and the Recipe Index, and ignore the dessert sections. There's a lot of good stuff in there! My husband has had great sugar levels recently just by eating lots of fruits and vegetables (good for IBS if cooked/chopped/pureed as needed), and eating lots of small meals (excellent for IBS!). He's actually been able to eat moderate amounts of pasta, bread, and potatoes. Under those sorts of guidelines, there's a lot of IBS recipes that will work for you.
