i want to try flaxseed oil for non-ibs reasons (dry skin), but i've heard of it being a laxative. in terms of it being fat, i figure i'll integrate it into *very* low-fat meals - making sure that with the oil, the whole meal is still low-fat and safe. beyond the added fat, is it likely to aggravate my ibs? are there any Ds out there with experience with flaxseed or fish oils? (i'm A, but mostly D, and my attacks are only D.) thanks.

Did you know that Luna Bars contain flaxseed? I haven't had a problem with the amount in the bars.

I was using ground flaxseed in my hot cereals and pancakes and as a topping for toast. I was able to tolerate about 1 tsp a day. I made the mistake once of adding 1-2 T and I had a bad attack of D. Since then, I haven't used ground flaxseed. I don't know if you would feel comfortable experimenting with something that's high in IF and known for its laxative effects - I wouldn't want you to risk an attack.

I haven't tried fish oil supplements, but I've been trying to eat more fish. Do you like canned tuna fish, sardines, or salmon?

i'm a vegetarian, so i don't do fish or fish oil - i have the flaxseed oil capsules, so i wouldn't have the IF to irritate me.

I didn't mean to be insensitive! I forgot you were a vegetarian (even though it's clearly stated in your signature line ).

I haven't tried the oil, but it's only the flaxseed that works as a laxative, right? The way you described incorporating flaxseed oil into your diet sounds like it would be safe.

oh, maria, don't worry at *all* about the vegetarian thing - it totally doesn't bother me.

if only flaxseed is supposed to be the laxative, then i'll give the oil caps a shot. thanks!

I have tried both flaxseed and fish oil supplements (capsules) and both seemed to give me D almost immediately. However, this was before my IBS diagnosis and starting Heather's diet, so I don't think I was careful about taking them on a full stomach. My reaction was pretty strong though.

It sounds like your being cautious, so I don't see any harm in trying. Flaxseed oil did wonders for my mother's hair, its probably great for skin too.

(I am also an "A, but mostly D, and my attacks are only D".)

I was taking Flax Oil and it was making me nauseated so I stopped using it. I switched to Oilsmart by Renew Life and that one made me really sick. So, I don't do oils at all anymore!! Just be careful with it and if you notice your nausea getting worse, it's from the Flax. It has been known to cause nausea in some people, according to the chick that works at my Health Food Store...

Flax borage oil (my fibro doc wanted me to start taking fish oil to attempt to help with the pain, but I'm a vegetarian too). Only been taking it a few days, but seems to not be causing a problem. I take one right after lunch and one right after dinner with my handful of fibro pills.

I take Spectrum Essentials Flax Borage oil essentials, each pill is 600 mg.

I'm a "D" also. I used to take flaxseed oil capsules because I read that it was extremely beneficial due to its Omega oil, which, BTW, is the GOOD oil, and can help reduce cholesterol -- which was my goal. I took bottles of the stuff, then just got lazy and stopped buying it. Well, I have to go clear across town to the closest health food store to get it, and it's just a big pain....

I can guarantee you, it does NOT aggravate IBS attacks. I think you would be pleasantly surprised. Be sure, when you purchase it, that it's in the REFRIGERATED section; otherwise, it's rancid, don't buy it!
