Hi Shanna! I'm glad this sounded so good to you. I didn't have any extra batter, but I did fill up the pie shell as full as it would possibly get. As for the firmness, mine was quite firm. Maybe yours didn't firm up because you used regular lime juice? The reason I'm wondering is that this was one of the reviews on VegWeb:
This pie turned out really good, however, I wasnt able to find key lime sauce so I settled on sweetened lime juice. The only problem I had was that it wasnt really firm. Kinda hard to take an individual slice but that may be because I used lime juice. But it tastes great!
As for using regular lime juice, I hope it works out for you! This is what another reviewer said about that after someone else asked:
I think key limes are just a bit sweeter than regular limes. Make it with regular lime juice, and then taste it to make sure it's not too tart. If so, adjust your sweetener to your tastes. Good luck!
Anyway, I hope it ended up working out for you. If not, you really should try it with the key lime juice sometime... it's amazing!!
