the nail fumes are probably from some pretty toxic chemicals, and the smell may be enough to upset your body enough to trigger IBS. I've had similar things happen in freshly painted rooms, where the chemical smell just overwhelms me and makes me physically ill.

If the food cooking is food that has previously made you ill, that could also be a strong enough memory to cause problems with just the smell in the future.

Smell is the most powerful sense in terms of memory and emotional response, and those things tie in very strongly to your bowel's nervous system function.

So, I don't think you're imagining this!
