French bread would work okay if you could find loaves big enough. I've used whole wheat, but white bread works best because it makes prettier donuts. My donut cutter fits a slice of white bread perfectly, whereas I'm sure it wouldn't fit a slice of French bread. The donuts -- and the donut holes -- make a decorative top, and then you cut the squares according to the donut size -- very pretty for a party. You may not be able to find French bread big enough for a donut cutter. Oh, and don't forget, the crusts that you cut off the bread (around the donuts) are squeezed into the bottom of the dish, forming a bottom "crust", so there's no waste.
It's a good dish; I like it very much, my old stand-by! By the way, I have used turkey ham since I posted this, and it works every bit as well as dead pig, if not better.
