I do pilates once or twice a week and I really like it. I don't have a dvd to recommend since I go to a free class offered at my school but hopefully someone else will have something to recommend!

Everything Steph said is right though. Yes, pilates is GREAT for the abs. It's a really great core workout in general. But pilates could give you the hardest abs and you'd never be able to see it (under what you call your "spare tire") if you don't watch what you eat and incorporate a little (or a lot of) cardio in there as well... or just being active in general. (Take the stairs, park further away, etc...)
