Dear Sister (mainly) Ibs-D-ers
I don't post here often- thanks for being here. It's been a couple years in fact. I've had IBS-D since a trip to Central America about 12 years ago. In the past 8 years or so I've been stable, with occasional flare ups. I have learned what I can and can't tolerate- and am thankful I can tolerate a lot of foods most folks w/ IBS can't- as in steak, bacon, even a low fat burger, and salads (small quantities), small amounts of dairy, etc. THat said I generally eat low fat and healthy. Broccoli is the devil's work for me- I can only eat very small quanities of those kind of veg, and stick to cooked spinach, root veggies, and I tolerate a small flare of morning D almost in order to keep eating a small serving of things like collards, kale, etc. I take some Pepto Bismol a few mornings a month, and an immodium is necessary if I"m very hyped up or have a meeting, maybe 1-2 pills/month. SO under control, chronic, mild, w/ a flare up maybe 1-2 mornings/month. I am embarrassed to say it but I had gorgonzola last night and this will go down as Devil's Item #2 for my gut (after brocolli). Pretty miserable this morning. I shouldn't have. I maybe only have it once a year and am now getting it- "so that's why I feel sick on Christmas" (family puts it out). Gosh I feel awful this a.m.- like having a stomach bug. BTW after 12 years of tiring but managable symptoms (rarely miss work for ex) I thought I should go have a colon/endoscopy last summer. It was totally normal- lucky. That was after stool study for all kinds of parasites- also normal. Dr. would like me to do this breath test thing for bacteria, too. Like me he feels it is very suspicious about bacteria that I had a normal gut all my life until Central America- then blammo. SOmething "went south..."

Thanks for being there and listening. WHen I get a flare up and have to get my son to school on my own, and know all of our finances depend on my work etc- it can be scary. Thank you! It helps to vent I"ve found.
