Hi All,

Kind of a lurker here- but always grateful. I am an intermittant IBS-er, meaning I have periods of very low symptoms or even none, and then periods of high symptoms, but rarely severe (have only had severe pain a couple times in 10 years, bad attack maybe one morning or night every few mos). My gut issues spiral around, such that two GIs have said I have a "sensitive gut" but not full on IBS, though at times I meet the full criteria. I've never had serious D or C, but can have daily loose stools in the a.m. once or twice. Discomfort, upper GI gas and overal more stomach discomfort at night when prone, periods of reflux/nausea but not much for years. It's confusing because during "stable" periods I can eat quite a few even "danger" foods. But the past few mos I am SOOO sensitive to any veggies, it's really discouraging. Even if I eat soluble fiber with them I get bad gas and the past couple weeks D too ANYtime I eat any veggies. As it is I've cut 2/3 of my veggie intake from my diet..and I'm not talking raw I'm talking steamed. Even things that used to be okay like sweet potatoes, beets, potatoes, are givine me trouble. I had a stable day and wen tout tonight and had linguine w/ clam sauce loaded w/ garlic. Last couple times I had this I had very mild symptoms. TONIGHT SO gassy and D. Ugh. I'm under so much stress. I find IBS so tiring and hard sometimes. It makes me sad. I'm a passionate woman, cook, and food lover and I know part of the problem is I should cut out my one glass of red wine a night, garlic, spicy food, etc. I just feel sad right now, single mom and now in the beginning of a break up w/ a man I really love but do not feel is right for me. So IBS is flaring up. I work really hard as a therapist for teen girls and have a ton of responsibilities. I try SO hard at everything. I'm just tired 10 years later of all the IBS related stuff. I had an "iron" stomach, got food poisoning a couple times in my mid 30s and spent time in Central America- and that was that. Sorry to vent. I just feel like life is challening enough w/ out diarrea, nausea, gas, and an achey gut. I know many have it much worse- my symptoms are chronic but generally mild, w/ a "bad attack" a few times a year. Thanks to all who listened and all the best. For my question- in the middle of an attack my line is to take some pepto bismol first, the most mild intervention. If that does not work, AND I have to be somewhere take my child out etc- one immodium. But sometimes I feel like my body is trying to purge the offending thing- like garlic tonight, and it seems better NOT to stop the process... so if I can I "let it go" and drink peppermint tea. I find if I take immodium sometimes i end up w/ upper gi stuff later like upper gi gas or nausea, as if the offending food had no where to go but up!
Any thought on this??

Sorry to take so much space! May grats in advance.
