Hi Heather et al,
Thanks for the info on pregnancy/hormones and IBS. I have been a "lurker" on this site the past 5 years or so, as my IBS symptoms fluctuate pretty drastically and there are months at a time where it seems I don't have IBS "anymore"- i.e. I can eat pretty much what I want and not have symptoms more than a mild day or two at my PERIOD. Other times, like right now, I get a "flare up" of symptoms that could last for days, used to be even a couple weeks, and I have to be very careful again about food/stress level, rest. But apropos of your pregnancy/IBS post I wanted to share that my symptoms seemed to lessen greatly once I was through the first trimester. I'd have a tiny flare up now and then but felt way better more weeks than not. The BEST part is that nursing seemed to REALLY put my symptoms out of business. I nursed for 22 months! I know this now, because I STOPPED nursing a few weeks ago and am suddenly having a flare up of symptoms My acupuncturist is helping me (this has always been the biggest help for me) but I am feeling pretty discouraged at the moment as I am going through a separation/divorce w/ a toddler, have little control over that major stressor, and am now flaring up w/ IBS symptoms which for me are a little off the norm: normally not much pain- more discomfort, usually (but not always) mild diarrea, but a lot of nausea (oh joy). Anyhow, I have also noticed by paying close attention that my IBS or "sensitive gut" which is what my gastro called it some years ago since I don't meet the full picture of IBS flares up at OVULATION too for a day or two. Thought others might benefit from noticing this, and also based on my experience this would be another good reason to breastfeed your baby as long as possible! For me the stress relieving hormones, prolactin, etc, were wonderful for my tummy.

BEST TO ALLLLLLL!
Maggie
