Re: What do you use when you have urgent bowel movements

I'm new to site responding to a 2010 question I read. I have had severe IBS-D for 23 years. My extreme symptoms are daily. I was prescribed 30+ medicines which caused intolerable side effects and were not helpful. Yet there is one med that helps to reduce(not eliminate) the "immediate urge" to have a bowel movement (But does not reduce the number of bowel movements per day.) My GI specialist recommended "Prevalite powder" - a prescription used to help lower cholesterol. (I never had high cholesterol.) The main side effect is constipation. Prevalite reduces the urgency and helps to form stools. I have taken it daily for 15 years. Several times I stopped it to see if it was necessary. Each time just 2 days without it the urgent uncontrolled diarrhea returned. It is the only thing that helps just one of my IBS symptoms. Has anyone else used Prevalite that has helped?
