I saw TVP (texturized veg protien) in one of Heather's books. It said you could cook it like chicken. So I was in a hurry today when I got home, and put 3/4 of a cup or so in a sautee pan and cooked it in some garlic flavored chicken stock, and then I added some tomatoes and mushrooms. I served it over some rice, and it was so good. I am not sure if anyone else has cooked with it, but I really recommend it. It is kind of like tofu in that it takes onthe flavor of whatever you cook it with.

I'm glad it worked so well for you! I bought some TVP but haven't gotten around to trying it yet. Does anyone know how long it keeps in an airtight container?

In the freezer or the fridge? In the freezer I'd say for a very, very, very long time.

No, it's just at room temperature... it was just a bunch of flakes so I didn't think it needed to be refrigerated.

Oh. You hadn't hydrated it. We usually get ours already hydrated and frozen. Ok, so I still think it should last a long time. As long as Instant Mashed potatos or something. I'm sure you're fine.

Sorry for the confusion!

Phew, okay, you had me worried there for a minute. I didn't know it had to be "hydrated". I'm so ignorant about these things! Lol.

If it's dry, it'll last just about forever at room temp. Just keep in a sealed jar. -nt- new

My TVP was in chunks, like the size of marbles. That is why it looked and and kind of tasted like chicken.

So do I have to rehydrate it somehow before using? -nt- new
