I had a doctor once tell me when I was concerned about my stomach that I was "too aware of my bodily functions." Duh! When my stomach is gurgling all the time and I'm crapping up a storm....OF COURSE I'm going to be aware of it!

This isn't IBS-related, but I was told by a doctor after I was diagnosed with ADHD that I needed "to find some hobbies". Yup, that's going to help me pay attention at WORK!

When I was in high school, my IBS got so bad that I would throw up from the pain...DAILY! Literally, I'd come home from school, throw up and repeat...
So i went to the doc and my Mom, an RN/BSN suggested some pain meds for the intense cramping. He didn't want to give me any pain meds b/c"
"They will affect my personality and my relationship with others. Try tylenol. It's just as good"

Classic. No wonder it took me so long to get IBS under control!

Probably when my gynocologist said to me at 9 mths pregnant "don't worry, we have ways of getting the baby out if it gets stuck"! Not very comforting. But he was right. First child was vacuum suction, the second was forceps!

My first gyno appt. ever was when I was 16. I had severe periods. I went to the guy who delivered me. He gave me an exam and then later he met with me in his office and he said, "You look so much like your mother". Eek! Um, couldn't he have said that BEFORE the exam!!!???

"I'd rather have your IBS-D than my terrible migranes" - Since when did her migranes cause her to make dashes for the toilet and soil herself in public?!!!

"It's all in your mind." - Well now i just feel stupid and like it's my fault!

My mother was told she had a "bad case of flu" when she was actually pregnant. Her flu has lasted 32 years so far!!!

P.S,. this is the funniest thread of mails i've ever read!

I DO get migraines and I have to say the IBS is much worse! You're right - migraines don't cause you to make a mad dash for the bathroom and soil yourself in public! I'd rather lie down in a dark room with an ice pack on my head than be sweating and cramping up in the john - or panicking that I couldn't make it to one in time.

A few that come to mind:

"Drink a big cup of coffee." (from my GP, as a cure for my headaches. When I pointed out that this was murder on my IBS, she was like, "Why?")

"Get a boyfriend." (from a psychiatrist, as a solution to my IBS and eating disorder issues.)

"It looked kinda funny in there. But no, I don't think anything was wrong." (from my GI, after my colonoscopy. excuse me, FUNNY?? i'm not familiar with that medical terminology, could you put it in layman's terms?)

"Eat through the pain." (from a GI)

Plus all the Metamucil, raw veggies, fibre and water advice that we've all been told.

Hey all this isnt IBS related but still quite stupid.

After my open heart surgery and I was home recovering, I was on a heart moniter to watch my heart rate. Well I woke up one morning and couldnt catch my breath. My rate was 280. So I called my cardiologists office and told the nurse what was going on and he said I needed to get to the closest ER right now. So naturally I panicked a bit and started to cry.
He said "Oh, don't worry, youre not going to die or anything."
Yeah... thats such a relief!

Tonight after swimming, two ladies were talking about breakfast. One makes fried ground moose meat and mixes that with oatmeal. I grimmaced! Ugh!! My tum would never be able to handle it. She asked why such the face. I said I have trouble with wild game, red meat, etc. (the condensed version of the diet) The 2nd lady asked why. I said I have IBS. To which the 1st lady replied, oh, my nephew HAD that. Don't you know there is a surgery for that now? He had it and he's fine. Maybe you should look into it! Yep, there's some special surgery none of us have ever heard of that is a read-set-cure!! (WE WISH!!)

Just thought you'd all like a chuckle at that one!!!

This thread is priceless. Let me add my two cents:

I have a 36 degree curvature in my spine (scoliosis). When I was 10 years old and it started to curve and hurt like everything-I would lay awake at night and cry from the pain--my distraught parents were told by at least 4 doctors that it was "growing pains" and I would get over it. Well I got used to it. After I finished growing the pain stopped but the scoliosis is still there.

My GI told me to cure my IBS by not thinking about it so much!!! I could tell he had never had IBS.

HE told me I should take dulcolax every day for severe constipiation. I was sick for months and the doc kept dismissing me. No tests except for a sigmoidoscopy. Turned out I had an abdominal/pelvic abscess that finally ruptured. You cannot imagine the pain. I don't know how I made it home. I just flopped into bed. I was so delirious with pain I couldn't even think that I should go to the hospital. Two days later my husband took me to Kaiser. That doc told me it was either food poisoning or flu. No tests, nothing. My husband took me home where I rotted in bed a few more days. Then finally we went to emergency. My white count was 27,000. They finally took me seriously and admitted me. .After a couple days of testing me and triple antibiotics that did no good, they decided I had some kind of mass and needed a hysterectomy. Turned out when they opened me up my sigmoid colon was all black and necrotic (like dead). So they took out just about every organ in there. Ovaries, uterus, cervix, 12 inches of colon, appendix. Gave me a colostomy, but 4 months later they were able to reconnect my colon and close the colostomy. I won't even tell you all that happened during my hospitalization. It was almost like they were deliberately trying to kill me. It was the worst thing that every happened to me.
