Ugh!! I need to complain...

I just recently moved into a house that was turned into a 2 unit apartment building. We rent the downstairs (it's a walk-out so we have a front door that opens into the backyard). Anyway... the woman upstairs has taken the responsibility of caring for her sons children... 2 boys... one is 14 the other is 16. I am so sick of hearing loud music, I could just scream!!!!

The kids share a bedroom that also unfortunately, shares our bedroom wall. For the first 2 weeks we were here, they kept me awake every single night. It was either a loud radio, loud tv or one of them talking on the phone with loud voices. I sleep with a fan going everynight, which usually drowns out most noise for me, so you know this is loud. I tried sleeping on the couch a few times, because our window AC unit is right there and you can't really hear much else when it's on, but with a big belly, it's really uncomfortable.

Now I'm having to use earplugs everynight! Which would be fine, but they dry out my ears and make them bleed and not one company sells them in more than one size, so they're all too wide for my ears... which is also painful after a while.

So, this afternoon, I'm laying on the couch, with the AC going in hopes of taking a nap (something I can't seem to get away with not doing during this pregnancy) and I'm just about asleep, when I start hearing loud thumping noises. It's their d*mn music again!!!! Only this time it's so loud that everything in my apartment is vibrating! Good grief!!!

I have talked with their grandmother 3 times and the boys personally once, and it just does not seem to help! This does not help my already crabby attitude today!

Sorry to be a complainer, but there's only so much I can take of this crap!!! Thanks for listening... what would you do?

This is a little extreme, but if you've talk to them, and they aren't doing anything about it, call the police with a noise complaint.

Try putting your speakers (or radio or whatever) right next to and facing their wall. Play something classical or better yet DISCO ... (yuck). See if they like it.

I sympathize with you (I had a total party animal for a neighbor in my last apartment), but I'd hesitate to do anything to create animosity. You are going to have a baby very soon, and that baby might be up all night screaming. If that happens, you are going to be totally stressed out. Imagine how hard it would be for you to deal with the upstairs neighbors coming down and saying your baby is keeping them up all night. I'd do my best to grin and bear it until the baby is born. Then, you can have the built in "baby is sleeping" excuse to ask them to please keep the noise down. Or, you could do it in a sweet, Martha Stewart type way, and buy each of the boys a pair of decent (but not too expensive) headphones, and write them a note saying how nice it is to have young people around, but that you need your sleep. Catch more flies with honey, you know?

Yes, I agree, call the police. You've talked to the grandma three times and the boys once. Maybe try writing a letter and making a copy of it, explaining that you are pregnant and need your rest and you've asked them repeatately to keep it down and warn them that if they don't, you'll be forced to call the police. That way, if it comes down to it, you'll have sometghing to show the police that you've tried to peacefully resolve the issue on your own. Maybe even knock on the door when its really loud and have them come oer into your bedroom so they can see for themselves just how loud it is to you!

Have a tape recorder ready.... when they are loud...record it... you say the date & time.... do that for a little while... make a copy of it.. then give them a copy for their listening enjoyment!! (I'm just kidding....but this is something I might personally do if in this spot....but this is just MY character) LOL

I've thought about doing this, but what can the police do? Can they issue warnings or anything? I guess I figured the police really wouldn't be able to do much.

The police can give a warning and if you have to call them again, they can give a ticket for the loud noise!

I have loads of classical stuff I can play for them. Maybe I'll wait until I know they're sleeping (6:00 in the morning for instance) and play it nice and loud for them! Although I do have to say... they'll get their come-upons when our baby is born. I'm sure there'll be lots of 2,3,4,5 & 6:00 crying... just for them.

Not only will I have a good excuse, but I'll also have my very own built-in loud music for them... baby will make a great wake-up call for them.
