Pain management - no dice

Haven't been on the site for some time. After 4 years of dealing with this I finally went to my GP and told him that I give up. I asked for pain management as I would rather be high and comfortably numb than in pain. I was refused. He claims that pain management is area specific (back, neck, knee, etc) and that opiates would work for me for a short time but I owuld need more and more until they wouldn't work anymore. So, legal drugs are out. Booze is out (trigger). Medical pot is legal in my state but expensive and complicated. I am halfway through my life (maybe) and I am angry, angry, angry. Can't wait to see what I am like in 10 years or so. I know that I am going to snap. It is just a matter of time. If it wasn't for my wife and kids I would have by now. Just had to rant.

Your GP or GI doctor should have told you about the clinically tested FODMAP diet for managing IBS symptoms. Here is a link to a dietitian's discussion of the FODMAP approach to managing IBS symptoms and two links to other sources of information on the topic

Appreciate it. I already tried the FODMAP (5 months) and it didn't help much. Neither did Heather's IBS diet although both are obviously the way to go. I try to follow IBS diets as much as possible but it is depressing to do so because I feel like I am giving up so much and getting so little in return. I am going to try peppermint pills and tea again. Since the Dr. won't give me pain meds I am getting by with Advil.

So sorry that you're having such a rough time. I've been there. Here are some things that help me when the pain gets bad:
1) heat right on the abdomen (i use an old fashion heating pad right on my belly)
2) When I have a real gut wrenching attack, my doc prescribed a valium and a gabapentin (a pain reliever most often used for nerve pain). For some reason, these two will stop an full blown IBS attack in its tracks, usually within 30 minutes (from terrible pain to doing OK but goofy)

I do take Heather's acacia fiber twice a day, I take a pretty hefty probiotic (one that includes Bifido HN109), and have eliminated dairy and gluten from my diet as well as avoiding the usual triggers (seeds/nuts, raw fruits and veggies, artificial sweetners). This routine is boring as heck from a meal standpoint, but it's reduced my IBS attacks to one a month (from 2 a week!)
The other thing that really helped me (and I was extremely skeptical at the start), was the Hypnosis for IBS dvds. Don't know if they will help you, but when you're desperate like I was, you'll try anything.
I hope something here will help you. If you GP doesn't understand your IBS pain, find a GI specialist who does. It may take going to many docs, but it's worth it to find one that will work with you.
Best of luck!

Thanks for the thoughts. I have used all of that including the IBS hypno CD several times.

Haven't been on the site for quite a while. Following 4 years of managing this I at last went to my GP and let him know that I surrender. I requested agony administration as I would rather be high and agreeably numb than in ache. I was cannot. He asserts that torment administration is range particular (back, neck, knee, and so forth) and that sedatives would work for me for a brief time however I owuld require more until they wouldn't work any longer. In this way, legitimate medications are out. Moonshine is out (trigger). Therapeutic pot is legitimate in my state yet lavish and entangled.

Thanks for the reply. My daughter has IBS both
Mostly, tho, she has IBS pain. Food she can have that doesn't cause an attack is basically plain rice with slivers of protein (chicken, salmon, tofu, some lean beef). She has a long list of things that trigger attacks(particularly fruits and veggies, dairy, seeds/nuts--the usual IBS triggers). She's also on a gluten free diet which seems to help. She takes a probiotic every day and of course, has her acacia fiber twice a day.

Like many people with IBS, we can go for a week or so without any attacks at all and then out of the blue (with no discernable trigger food. Maybe it's anxiety?) she'll have a whopper. When that happens, she takes her meds (valium with gabapentin which stops even a full blown attack for her) but then she's out for the next 8 hours or so.
I'm very afraid that she's not going to be able to work. it's one thing to work around a class schedule, another thing entirely to work 8 hours a day every day and not lose your job because of IBS. I guess I just don't want to face the possibility of her not being able to support herself, of not having a "normal" life. Sorry to be so maudlin. This disorder is just breaking my heart for her.
