Hi. I have had ibs-d for 5 years now. I also have gastroparesis (delayed emptying of the stomach) and I am fructose intollorant. I have been in severe pain for the past five days now and I am hoping someone can help me figure out a way to stop it. I think I am having an ibs flareup because Ive had diarrhea the whole time. Except when I have had them in the past, I take imodium and the next day my stools are back to normal. I also take questran to control the constant diarrhea. It never stops so I have to take this medicine. It feels like gas pains because when I do go, the pain subsides and so does the severe bloating I am having. But this time the pain isnt going away. Does anyone have any advice?? The pain radiates all over my upper stomach area, which is where the bloating is. I cannot eat like most of you due to my other conditions. I cannot have any fiber at all and no veggies or fruit either which makes is so hard to eat anything. Thanks for your help.

I think you really need to see your doctor for this. This much diarrhea can be dangerous, and the change in your symptoms might indicate that you're dealing with a new or altered issue.

Based on my admittedly very limited knowledge from my own illness, this sounds more like GERD from the description of the pain. I had my GERD and IBS-D start at around the same time, and it took us some time to figure out which symptoms belonged to which illness. The GERD pain is always centered and high on my abdomen. When it's been affecting my esophagus, the pain is just between the ribs and below the sternum. Lately (with treatment by Nexium and diet changes), it affects only my stomach, which is just slightly lower but feels like a distinctly different sort of pain, particularly if I probe both areas for tenderness. Most of the GERD recommendations are already incorporated in Heather's diet guidelines. Citrus, vinegars, and anything acidic are a big no no though.

When I had uncontrollable diarrhea for about a week earlier this year, my GI doc recommended a clear liquids diet while we tried to get it under control. I still had diarrhea even from my clear liquids in the first few days but it was much less severe, which was a HUGE relief at that point. I was just exhausted. Clear liquids would be clear broth, jello, and some juices. I stuck to apple juice and low fat low sodium chicken broth, plus a variety of flavors of jello. I'm not sure if the jello had artificial sweeteners-- you'd want to check for that before trying it, of course.
