Vegetarian Women Weigh Less Than Meat-Eaters

By Amy Norton

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Women who eat little or no meat are less likely to be overweight than their more carnivorous peers, according to a new study.

The findings, say researchers, suggest that replacing some meat and other animal products with plant-based fare may help people control their weight.

The study of more than 55,000 Swedish women found that those who identified themselves as vegetarian or vegan tended to weigh less than meat-eaters, and were less likely to be overweight or obese.

The vegetarian group included women who ate no meat, fish or eggs but did consume dairy products (lactovegetarians), as well as "semivegetarians," who said they sometimes ate fish or eggs. Vegans eat no animal products, including dairy.

In the study, self-proclaimed vegans were two-thirds less likely than meat-eaters to be overweight or obese, while the two vegetarian groups were about half as likely as meat-eaters to be overweight -- even with other factors, such as age, exercise and total calorie intake, taken into account.

While this was not a weight-loss study, the findings do suggest that a plant-based diet may aid in weight control, according to P. Kirstin Newby, a researcher at Tufts University in Boston.

But that doesn't necessarily mean shunning meat and other animal products, she told Reuters Health, noting that semivegetarians in the study had a lower risk of being overweight.

The study, in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, included 55,459 healthy middle-aged and older women who were surveyed about their eating habits, weight and other health and lifestyle factors. A small percentage identified themselves as vegan or vegetarian.

Overall, vegans had the lowest average body mass index (BMI) -- a measure of weight in relation to height -- followed by vegetarians, then meat-eaters. While 40 percent of meat-eaters were overweight or obese, only 25 to 29 percent of vegetarians and vegans were, Newby and her colleagues report.

The findings, they point out, run counter to the current "fad" of high-protein, low-carbohydrate diets.

That vegetarians are leaner than meat-eaters, according to the researchers, highlights the fact that not all carbohydrates are equal. A diet of fiber-rich carbs like fruits, vegetables and whole grains, they note, differs from one loaded with refined carbohydrates such as those in white bread and snack foods.

"Plant foods are generally high-carb," Newby said, "but they also contain a lot of fiber -- which helps you to feel full -- and they also have other nutrients that are important to overall health."

Because these nutrients may help ward off heart disease and cancer, she noted, there are "lots of good reasons" besides weight control to eat a plant-based diet.

For people who do eat animal products, Newby added, it's important to limit saturated fat by choosing lean cuts of meat and low-fat dairy products.

Yeah, I would definitely say that being a vegetarian keeps me thinner than a lot of my friends and relatives- even when I go through periods of being bad and not watching what I eat. Of course, so does IBS.

Shannon! Try a vegetarian steak, i.e. a portabella mushroom.
Seriously. Maybe your hubby will put them on the menu. They're really MEATY. Honestly. I think I've got a vegetarian steakhouse downstairs in the fridge. I wished you'd adopt some more Bart Simpson-ism's and "Don't have a cow!" Maybe eating what the cow's eat would be more politically acceptable as an alternative?

I don't think that restaurants like the Outback can individually choose what to serve- I think they're stuck with a corporate mandated menu. But I could be wrong. Not so sore?

Also, we love portabellas- but it's easy to get sick of them fast when they're EVERYONE's alternative for vegetarians.

I'm starting to get sick of portabellas, too. I'm considering a hiatus. These days, more than anything, I'm craving Thai food, especially their soups!!! I'm also craving carrots, beets, swiss chard. Colour!

I was just thinking of those and how yummy they are. Unfortunately, Trev's just one guy, and he's one boss of one outback of 20 in Canada, and 1000 in the world!! But I'll pass the idea along. It'd be nice to give veggies and vegans a choice.

You know what? I so very seldom eat red meat, it's not even funny. I wouldn't miss it. I do, however, eat chicken and do enjoy it. And seafood. Please don't hate me. Who knows what will happen over the next few years tho.

Shannon: I will not curse you for your meat/fish habit. I'm not a better person because I don't eat animals. What a person eats/drinks does not determine their value, their worth. You are in the habit of eating meat, it is your way, your tradition. Honestly, some people make really crappy vegans. My body just doesn't like meat. Seriously. It rejects meat. It ejects meat. My conscience and psyche reject it too. I'm the one that has to live with that and quite frankly I never liked animal products/animals as food.
Could it be a blood type thing? I don't know, but I'm a type A. Maybe it's karma? I just can't sleep at night with a cooked dead creature swimming in my intestines. It gives me nightmares. I am extreme and I know this, but hey...I'm true to me, to my body and my heart and my soul. It is my choice to be an herbivore and yours to be an omnivore and we both respectively have to make our beds and our minds. Does that make sense? Basically, I'm not cursing you or trying to change you. Maybe, it's just a mouthful of Gestalt in the middle of the afternoon...but you are you and I am I...and well neither of us exists to live up to each other's expectations!

Guilty. If you even want to let a few shrimp go swimming in that soup go for it. Just pop a few out of the freezer. Maybe toss in a few carrot slivers or well...a shitake mushrooms or well...something? I always think of swimming pools when I eat soup. SHARK attack. Lily pad mushrooms in my soup.

Hey Wind- have you had the fake Chinese shrimp? They're soy, and vegan, and super yummy. You don't seem like a substitute type of person, but we got them as a special treat. And fake salmon is the absolute best. I wish we could still get some around here!

You're right--I'm not a substitute type. I've had the fake shrimp, though and other "faux" delights. Fake squid, etc. I used to love these faux tuna steaks, years ago...but they stopped being available. I think the company was called Mo something or other. The other faux treats I've sampled have been either at Asian restaurants or Vegetarian fast-food places and that was years ago. Soy makes me feel really ill though, and my doctor told me not to eat it. I had some bloodwork done and it came back showing sensitivities/intolerances to the stuff. I just eat plain old real food. I've gone back to my as organic as possible philosophy which I've strayed from to due skin/breathing problems mostly. (Allergy attacks) When I say I'm allergic to an unbelievable amount of things, I'm not kidding. I can only wear cotton and a few other fabrics that I'd rather not wear.

But faux foods are fun. If I'm feeling fishy I just eat corn!

I didn't think you were pedantic in the least-just because i do waver toward wanting to "veg out"....but I don't think I get fully full without protein. I do like most meat, too, I guess...but ideologically I like the concept of veganism.

Are you a visual too? When people tell me their eyes almost poppede out, I see that exact image in my head and crack up. i'm so vivid. I love the swimming analogy, but I think I'll keep the shrimp out of my soup for fear of them screaming when I eat them. (AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!! just like the lysol commercial!)

I have hundreds of allergies-including shellfish, i've been told, alcohol, and kiwis(I believe, it does make my tongue swell) and asthma and IBS and GERD. I think it's all connected with sensitive little bodies. All my problems are due to a hypersensitive body! great, delicate, large flower.

Yes, I'm a visual. I think pictographically--pornographically? I eat with my eyes, my nose...all of my senses. I even eat with my ears. Do I eat out? I haven't been eating out enough lately. Presentation to even only one's self makes a huge difference, even if it's coming out of a box or a package or plastic, etc. If I'm going to let it enter my body through the orfice that is my mouth, it must live (?) up to certain standards, certain ethics. Enough. It just has to look good, or at least interesting...I like to play with my food, that's why I bother to prepare it. My carrots have got to have that yang!!! I'll stop babbling, but yes, yes, yes!!! I've got to eat with my eyes...it has to keep me coming back, cooking (not with gas!) it has to have that "WHEN HARRY MET SALLY" deli scene effect, i.e. "I'll have what she's having" (just hold the PICKLE, s.v.p.)

Incidentally, I've got eyes that sometimes "popeye" out. You, dear Shannon, are highly visceral. You crack me up.

Kate, IBS-D.
