well, it's been an interesting few days.

After my visit to the emergency room on Saturday due to the pain, I got a call early Monday morning from the GI doc who was so awful to me and basically completely turfed me after my colonoscopy (wouldn't even do a follow-up) saying that they would really like to see me again. Interesting...apparently all I had to do was go into the hospital writhing in pain to get his attention.

Anyways, I went to my regular doc today as a follow-up since the GI appointment is taking some time, and they gave me Oxycodone to manage the pain, since the Tylenol 3s weren't working and I'm not eating at all really so they didn't want to give me any NSAIDS which have to be taken on an empty stomach.

Thing is, I was doing some reading on the Oxycodone and I came across this statement: "The concurrent use of anticholinergics with narcotics may produce paralytic ileus."

Does anyone know what paralytic ileus is? Because I'm also taking LIbrax which has an anticholinergic in it, but my doc and pharmacist said it should be ok...but that doesn't sound good.

Anyone had any experience with this?
Thanks,
Kelly

Everything I have read or heard about Oxycodone is that it is highly addictive. Personally I would not take the stuff. My Mother takes this several times a day every single day of her life and it shows. There has to be another way to control your pain and if it were me I would explore other options first, the oxcodone would be the very last resort.

if you need the percocet, take it. just make sure you're not taking it more often than prescribed. maybe make a chart so you can tick off each dose on a schedule.

i've been reading a lot about pain relief and many doctors feel that you're less likely to get addicted if you take it really consciously and are aware of the potential for abuse. if you don't have any addiction problems, i say take what you need! you've been in so much misery, you deserve to take the medicines that will help you.

ps: i tend to trust pharmacists. if he said it's ok, then i think you'll be ok. just note if you have an increase in pain or any other symptoms that they warn against.

symptoms:
Abdominal fullness, gaseous
Abdominal distention
Abdominal pain and cramping
Vomiting
Failure to pass gas or stool (constipation)
Diarrhea
Breath odor

Kelly,

"Paralytic" means affected with paralysis, and "ileus" is an intestinal obstruction.

I looked up Oxycodone -- a pain killer -- and it says:

Quote:

Oxycodone works similarly to narcotic drugs like morphine and has similar pain-killing and addictive effects.

One hazard of taking oxycodone continuously for longer than several weeks is addiction. DO NOT STOP TAKING YOUR DRUG SUDDENLY. With the help of your doctor, work out a schedule for slowly lowering the amount of the drug you take by about 5-10% each day. Keep a written record of the dosage reduction schedule with you. These steps will make it much easier to become drug-free without developing distressing symptoms of drug withdrawal.

(Emphasis in original.)

Apparently, you can take a combination of acetaminophen and Oxycodone. It says:

Quote:

Together, these two drugs produce a rational combination that relieves pain better than acetaminophen alone but has less risk of side effects than the larger dose of oxycodone that would be needed if oxycodone were used alone.

I sure wouldn't think you'd need an antispasmodic with this drug!

Thank you all for your advice.

I am aware of the addictive potential but I have literally exhausted all other options, and they think the pain is being increased because of my endometriosis, but it's going to take a few months to see a specialist for that. I've actually been on the drug before, a long time ago before my stomach problems for a severe bone infection, and I had no problem coming off it.

The pharmacist explained it to me that if you're pain truly is genuine, you won't have as much trouble, and that it's important to not take more than you need...I was actually just more concerned about it making my tummy worse rather than better.

I think I'll half the pills and start with that and see how we go

Thanks,
Kelly

Strong meds like pain killers make my IBS worse. In my opinion get the antispasmodic meds soon. Take them instead of Oxycodone. If you can. As long as you think it's your IBS causing the pain instead of a blockage. The hang over feeling from those strong pain meds can be awful, too.

Kelly,
I have been perscribed oxycodone for post surgery pain (surgery related to IBS complications of course!). In my opinion, if it was perscribed to you, your pain warrants it. I remember some advice though - do not take this stuff on an empty stomach and take it easy while you're on it. This drug made me quite naucius. If I was doing anything other than sitting still and relaxing for a couple hours after a meal, I would loose my lunch. I would stick to soluable fibers, lots of water and comfort foods! On the addiction issue, it is a concern, but doctors would not perscribe it if it wasn't necesarry - believe me there are SEVERE penalties for those who do. I was all worried when I was taking them too because my husband is a DEA agent and I had this horrible thought I would get addicted and he would get in trouble! Take only the minimum dose you need. I remember staring off with two pills twice a day right after surgery and gradually weening myself down to one a half and one pill and then only half a pill. Also - be careful where and how you store these things. Keep the bottle in your medicine cabinet. If you need to take pills while you're out of the house, only take those pills with you, not the bottle. These things sell upwards of 15.00 a pill on the street and people will steel them from you and that could cause some administrative hassle! (That's a hint from the hubby)! Other than that, I would say get your rest, take care of yourself, keep your precautions in mind (they're always good for you) and get better soon.

Kelly,

I hope that you are feeling better soon. I must apologize for coming on too strong in my earlier post. I am afraid I wasn't much help or very supportive as I let my personal feelings get in the way. I have a very negative history with pain meds because my mother is addicted to prescription pain medication. She was in recovery until she was prescribed oxycodone about a year ago. I have very negative feelings about this whole situation and this drug. I should not have let my personal feelings come out when responding to you. I really am sorry.

I know that under a doctors supervision that taking any pain med is fine and I don't think he would have prescribed it if you didn't need it. I hope that it helps with the pain enough that you are able to eat and get stable.

Hey Janey,

Please don't be sorry It's no problem...I know how serious these drugs can be and alot of people feel simliarily to you. I actually have an adult friend of my parents who is seriously addicted to it and a few other types of drugs, so I make sure I'm very careful that's all.

I actually started it yesterday and figured I'd start with a 1/2 even though they suggested I could take two, and 1/2 was enough, so I'm glad I did that. I ate food for the first time in 4 days! So that was pretty exciting

Please don't be sorry, you were just looking out for me, and I appreciate it

Kelly
