You know I rarely eat banana's even though they seem to be a soluble fiber safe food.

Whenever I do eat them...I get a bloated/tingling feeling...and I never understood why since this is a natural fruit NOT some HCFS jellied canned fruit.

Hey linisue-

I searched for "bananas" within the Eating for IBS Diet Board, and Syl posted on Aug 1 2009 about high fructose corn syrup and how some folks with IBS don't absorb it very well, making them sensitive to some fruit. If you click on the link to the newsletter and look up the article, you'll find a whole list of fruits that are higher in fructose than glucose.

I'm not sure how relevant that is to bananas since I didn't see them in the list. And I'm not sure how relevant fructose malabsorption is to me, since right now I can't eat any fruit at all lest I get sick for days. I can't even eat banana bread!

I'm actually getting tested today for food allergies to rule that out as the cause. It sounds like others have problems with bananas too, so at least I'm not alone there!

But why would pure bananas give us a problem?
I can see if they were canned in a syrup they may cause problems, but a fresh banana?

It's soluable fiber.

When I eat bananas, they have to be pretty green. Otherwise, I tend to get heartburn almost immediately from them.

Still don't understand why bananas cause trouble.

I seem to feel bloated/gassy no matter what I eat. I can't even find a safe staple-- even the soluble fiber foods make me feel that way. I thought I could at least trust bananas but maybe they are the culprit too. How do figure out what works and what doesn't when everything seems to do the same thing? Sometimes I feel better eating trigger foods than I do eating soluble fiber foods.
