You drink the fennel tea before you eat? I thought it was supposed to be done afterwards and that it didn't work as a preventative, only as a way to release the gas? Have I been doing this wrong all along?

Thanks for your tips Celia. I found what you said really interesting. When i think about it my gas does seem to be wose if i snack. Interesting... I'm going to try that one out as well as the whole drinks thing. Thanks again.

I hope it helps you as it did me, Sarah. I've found that if I am going to cheat on this rule it is best not to do so after dinner. Snacking during the day can give me gas, but snacking at night can lead to worse symptoms in the morning: pain, increased gas and bloating and/or nausea. I think of the intervals between meals as mini-fasts allowing my gut to rest, followed by a longer fast at night. I also sleep better when most of the work of digestion is finished before I put my head on the pillow.

Hi Celia,

I think your post is interesting. But don't you get hungry inbetween meals? I don't eat dinner until 7pm so that's 7 hours after lunch. How big are your breakfast/lunch/dinner?

Seven hours would kill me! Personally, I can't go more than about 3-4 hours without putting some fuel in my body; I turn into a grumpy cow and get light-headed, and I'm always ravenous when I wake up! I think some people with slower metabolisms find it easier to go for long stretches without food, while others with faster ones need to eat more frequently (did somebody say, "metabolic typing"!?)

I'd like to know what cleansing the gut means actually; maybe Celia you could post a link to the article?

Sorry to hear that you're allergic to the ingredients in Gas Stop. How about the fennel seed tablets? I've also read here about eliminating the drinking while eating. K2 says it has helped her, however I am ridiculous about how I drink when I eat. I actually have to have a sip or two of water after each bite or it makes me crazy! When I am in a restaurant, I will not touch my meal if they have not yet brought me a water. lol...I know it's probably the worst habit for IBS. My husband on the other hand can eat an entire meal and then drink a huge glass of liquid afterwards. And 2 hours later?!! Gosh I would die!

Hi, Zara,

I do get hungry but fortunately I don't have to go seven hours between meals. Ideally I space them 4 or 5 hours apart with dinner no later than 6pm. An early dinner is preferable because it allows me a longer fast at night. That improves my sleep which in turn improves the quality of my digestion.

I eat a small breakfast to hold me till lunch, which is my big meal of the day. Having the big meal at lunch rather than dinner makes sense in terms of metabolism---I need more energy during the day than I do at night. A big lunch keeps me from snacking in the late afternoon, and a light dinner is easy to digest before bedtime.

I do get tempted to snack at night---an old bad habit of mine---but I "just say no", especially to heavy foods. Eating something high fat at night is a sure way to produce nausea in the morning.

I note that you're a C-er. If your schedule is such that you are forced to go longer than five hours between meals, (and assuming that you're not sugar sensitive) you might try snacking on freshly squeezed vegetable juice, which is readily digested and quickly absorbed because it is full of enzymes that aid digestion. When necessary I juice some up at night in my Champion juicer and then put it on ice in a tight thermos for the next day. Freshly squeezed, pure vegetable juice (I don't include tomato, which is an acid fruit) is the one approved snack for me. It boosts energy without burdening digestion; it is also excellent for C. My favorite is carrot/spinach juice which I find soothing for the gut and delicious, surprisingly---I know it sounds dreadful.

Hi, Jodie,

I'm sorry---it was a quote from a gastroenterologist in an excerpt from a brief article from a health newsletter that someone e-mailed me and which I've since jettisoned. The article didn't elaborate. I just noted it as a possibly useful principle, observed my symptoms and then (grudgingly) gave up snacking. After trying it for a while the cause and effect (for me) was clear.

Based on what I've read elsewhere I think it probably refers to ensuring complete digestion so that no undigested particles are left to ferment in the colon, causing gas and other problems.

Hello line415,

I have read a lot of your posts and I can relate to mostly all of them. I was wondering where you are in NJ? As I live in Yardley PA which is 10 min from trenton NJ. My husband actually works in Princeton. I am new to the IBS site for about a month or so now. Its so nice to have met all of these nice people. And to realize all of my fears and anxiety are common with other people. I have had IBS for over 10 or so years and started with panic attacks at age 25. I am married and turning 37 in march and want to start again with trying to have a baby. This year has been a struggle with IBS so it has not put me in the mood per say. But I could use some good support from others whom has kids or was preggo with IBS. It just scares me what I will feel like?? And the one post about you being nervous to take your kids to the school bus so touched home with me. Unfortunally, my mind makes me thinks about things that I dont need to even obsess about it..LOL

I have been taking gas x too but I don't think they help at all and am wondering if they could actually cause more constipation. All I feel is it makes my stomach rumble and make sounds. Any thought?
