How do I find the way through? Help

I was fortunate to have found this site and Heather's book many many moons ago.....yet it is now that I have been taking "normal life" for granted, that I have been brought to a new bottom where I have been unable to tolerate much....and am wondering how long this can last....whether I will be eating off the "when you can't eat anything" list for "the rest of my life" (exaggeration! reflecting desperation and pain). I am at the brink of giving up my job to decrease the stress...I am afraid that I will be laughed at and not believed.

NanciW,

I am so sorry to hear that you're not feeling well physically and emotionally. It sounds like you were stable for a quite awhile and now something has changed up for you. Without knowing too many details of what's happening one of the best places to start is to get really clear that it's your IBS and not something more serious. So, it's best to always get checked out by your physician to rule out anything else more serious.

If it does turn out to be your IBS, it could be that something triggered your gut into an agitated state again. I've been IBS stable for 3 years now but stable to me means that if I'm mindful of my eating choices 100% of the time I still can have the occasional flare-up. I have accepted that in my case my IBS condition is here to stay, it's part of who I am, I have learned to "be with" it in all it's stages stable or not.

Of course one can feel such despair when it rears it's ugly head especially when we thought we had it under control. You are not alone. Please utilize this board for support that may help and comfort you. We are so here for you! Before you make any big career decisions find a place to get calm and with that you will have clarity as what your next step will be. Holding good thoughts for you.

~Alicia

Hi Nancy, were you following the EFI diet when you got this flare up, or were you sneaking in trigger foods?

I think we have all been there. And I know that knowing that doesn't make anything much easier. Have you tried hypnotherapy yet? It is very effective for most people in reducing IBS symptoms and as an added bonus, can lower stress levels dramatically. And if your job is stressing you out, there's no shame in leaving it for a different one. We're all here for you. Hang in there.

Thank you for your thought-filled response.......it is the long term acceptance that IBS is always with me that I struggle with. I become overly liberal with my diet of food and obligations.

Oh I had totally forgotten the "yolk" trigger strange how we can gloss over a trigger when we like the item! It had been so many years since I had really been brought to a stop by IBS and I was eating mostly in the yellow and red zone. I have now gotten back into the green zone and have been throwing out things that should not be tempting me. I have been struggling with low energy having been totally zapped by multiple days of D compounded by sorrow.

Thank you for your input, just knowing that others have gone through the difficulties and have emerged is helpful. I have found help through meditation and relaxation exercises in the past and imagine that similar assist from hypnotherapy would occur. At the moment I am feeling too much in a hole to access resources.

It is easy to feel the way you do Nancy. I don't want to accept that the IBS is with me forever. I read a post awhile ago in which the person referenced how they were in denial, slipping back into old dietary habits, thinking, "oh...I'll probably be alright. I can eat like everyone else." That's me. I'm working on the acceptance as I notice how much better my body is feeling when I am avoiding the triggers. Look at it this way...instead of being upset about this set-back, you are fortunate that you know your body can handle some "leeway" with trickier foods. You say you have been in the red and yellow zone and now are in the green zone trying to recoup. Be disciplined and strict with yourself for awhile until you are stable again, with the goal in mind that you may be able to stay green and yellow without a future problem. And maybe even have a red item now and then. I hope that helps.

I know it is very discouraging and especially this time of year. I ate 2 butter cookies this morning and now I'm like, "Why on earth did I do that?" No attack, but I feel just plain "yucky" now and if I have an attack tomorrow or feel uneasy, it will be my own fault. It's because it was sitting there on the counter from a weekend party. Great idea to throw out all the temptations. Those cookies are going right in the garbage! But if there is something that I REALLY love, I look forward to the day that I might be able to handle a couple bites or a small piece of something. I can't rush my body though...need to get more stable first.

So hang in there. Part of the IBS battle is learning and knowing your own body which it seems like you already do, so just pick your chin up and get back on track. We're here for you to vent in the meantime.

Man! I totally did that with the sugar cookies in the employee lounge yesterday! REGRET. I had gas all night. Bah. I guess it's good that my body "reminds" me when I mess up, though. Maybe I'll learn that way.

Yeah, I had gas today too! I suppose I am getting more stable b/c it didn't put me over the edge, but I am the kind of person that if you give me an inch (with food), I'll take a foot, so I have to just ban it altogether or I'll get out of control thinking I can handle anything. I ate safely the rest of today and I feel so much better. I loved the statement that I think Gracie made recently in a post...about if you get off track or fall off the bandwagon, you are just one meal away from getting back on. Great point Gracie (or whoever said it)...I keep trying to remember that.
