So, I went to my GI doc yesterday afternoon and I was very nervous about it b/c I wanted to tell him about some GI motility/pelvic/anorectal testing that I believe I should have done, but it went great ! He agreed with me totally. I told him why(my symptoms and concerns)I felt this way. He also feels we should get to the bottom of all of this and we need to find out if there's any structural abnormalities like ODS(Obstruct Defecation Syndrome) which is form of chronic C. They are calling me on Monday to schedule all the testing. I'm nervous abt it, but I want to know that I really have IBS and not something else that mimics IBS-C. Many women are misdiagnosed with IBS, but it's really something else. These are the tests I believe he will do:
-Defecating proctogram: In this radiologic test, the patient expels barium paste to determine whether there are anatomic abnormalities such as a rectocele and to assess whether pelvic floor dynamics are appropriate.
-Colonic manometry: This helps determine whether the colon is able to generate appropriate peristaltic contractions, or if it is atonic.
-Anorectal manometry: This test measures sphincter pressures, assesses rectal sensation, and evaluates a patient's ability to expel a rectal balloon.

For you guys that already had these testing done, I would really appreciate for you to share your experiences with me, please!!!! Thank you so much always.
The small bowel test results were good. He also mentioned that my colonoscopy and biopsy were fine so the search continues...

Look forward to hear from some of you soon.

Blessings,
Abi

Ab, What was the small bowel test? I've written down all that you have been told. I go to the GI doc on Tues at 3:00. Never heard of these? Are you put out while having these tests done. Carol

Hi Abby, I've had the MRI defacography(defacating proctogram)
and the anorectal manometry. The AM is really easy. I had a
4 second balloon expulsion time, and I got a 'good' pass on
the test. The defacography wasn't as much fun. They stick
this blue goop which looks like brylcream<laugh> into your
rectum, Then they tell you to try and push it out, then stop,
then push, then stop. It is a bit of a literal pain in the
butt. Finally they let you run to the bathroom and get rid
of it. They found that my anorectal junction decends 3.8cm
instead of the 'normal' 2.2cm, but they said it wasn't
necessarily pathologic. Also they didn't find any 'celes'.
There are three types, recto, cysto, and I forget the last
one. One more thing, in the AM, don't forget NOT to flush
the balloon down the toilet. For some reason they want it?!

Thank you so much for the info...but, what if I feel like having a BM when they start working on my rectum? When I have to go, I have to go, I can't hold it. Did you feel like having a BM while you were having these tests? Is like I want to know the test results, but I don't want to go thru the testing process.
How long ago did you have these testing done? Did you have to go to the hospital for it?

Thanks again!
Blessings,
Abi

Caroll56,

About the small bowel test, they give you this white thick liquid to dink and they take X-ray every 15 min until the whole liquid is down to your bowels. They want to know how fast or slow stuffs moves thru your GI.
For the other test, you have to be awake. I have been doing lots of reading. A few of the websites I went to is the Mayo clinic website and here: www.constipation.net/Chapters/10_ibs.html?
Read as much as you can and ask your GI doc if you think you need more testing.

Blessings,
Abi

Abby, If you feel like a BM might be coming on before the
test just go and push out whatever you can. That's what I did
and didn't have any problem during the MRI. I had these tests
done back in January at Northwestern Univ. Hospital in
Chicago. By the way, neither test takes too long, about 20
minutes. Good Luck with them!! -Bob
