hey everyone. I have been really excited to start my acacia, so yesterday evening I took 1/3 of a teaspoon with applesauce and straight away ate a huge dinner of barley, sweet potato, asparagus and carrots (very safe dinner for me). Everything felt fine, bit gasy, nothing out of the ordinary. I woke up at 2am and had the WORST D I have had since a ten day course of strong antibiotics - I mean, the D was comparable to that! I had been constipated for a few days, I am IBS C predominant with a touch of A. The only things I ate yesterday are time tested safe foods for me. I can only believe it was that tiny portion of acacia that knocked me out like that. It wasn't fun and has made me really scared of it. Is this normal??????? What the hell happened? I am starting to think crazy things like 'maybe I don't have IBS', maybe its something else? I mean, I eat loads of fibre everyday in the form of oatmeal, fruits, brown rice - food (apart from a bad curry in India) has never given me D like this before.. I really need help...thank you so much...off to eat a load of french bread...

Well, it could have been the acacia. I don't take the stuff, and I never have, so I can't relate from personal acacia-taking experience, but my first SFS of choice was Citrucel, and man oh man, did that stuff just about kill me. I started out taking 1/2 tsp (which is a LOT less fiber per dose than even 1/3 tsp acacia), and it gave me wicked gas, cramping, and D. It never got any better, either, so after a month of struggling along taking the Citrucel, I finally just gave up and tried something else - and I never had a single problem from a fiber supplement again.
It could be that you just need to get used to it. It could be that acacia isn't the supplement for you. Unfortunately, you really won't know until you've taken it for a little while, and see if you keep having problems. A reaction like that to a first dose - and to increases, by the way - isn't all that uncommon, but if it continues, it's something to be concerned about.
And I'm rambling. Feel better!

I'm amazed. I'd suggest sticking to 1/3 teaspoon a day for a few days and see how you go.
Good luck.

thats a very severe reaction- I'd suggest going back to 1/4 teaspoon and sticking with it for 3/4 days and see if it gets better.. it may have been too much fiber too fast- I started with a lower concentrate fiber (benefiber) and later switched to acacia... I've adjusted easily and well, but I had some issues those first few days and when I first increased the doses on the benefiber...
thanks...

Acacia and I didn't get a long very well either! It mad my stomache feel horrible for days....I could't figure it out, I was eating everything safe....I finally figured out after a week or so that it was the Acacia.
I stopped taking it and a few months later I gave it a try again...same thing happened! So I don't take the stuff needless to say!
Try something else. I do just fine with Citrucel. Hope you feel better soon!

Sorry that happened to you! I'm always struggling with C, and no SFS has ever given me D. I'm taking about 1 1/4 tsp of acacia every morning & evening before meals, but I'm still C. Wow! Maybe your body will get used to the SFS & will do great on it.

Thanks for your advice Casey - you are always so amazing at giving advice... I feel much better about last night now. I sat on that toilet swearing I wouldn't go near it again, but I think I will persevere for a while. If not I will move to another type...oh this ibs takes so much trial and error!!!

We could split the difference & both be normal! Wouldn't that be nice?
Hope you're feeling better today.

Is it possible it wasn't the acacia at all but something else that caused the D? Just a thought....hope you feel better!!

hey Kimm...thanks for the reply - I am certain it must have been the acacia because nothing ever gives me D apart from food poisoning and antibiotics. I can get sloppyish sometimes from too much wholegrain or something but last night was that kind of D that everyone in the house can hear but there is no way of making it quiet! so embarrassing! hahahhahaha...I ate carefully yesterday. and anyway, when I eat a trigger it makes me C usually or bloated and nauseaous...not D like that. I thought I had a bug or something, it was that strong...but felt fine a little while later and no fever or anything...
