I really want to start doing yoga but I am too nervous to go to a class on my own and my friends and family are far too busy, lazy or disorganized to come with me. Does anyone do yoga at home? I mean completely at home, teach it yourself, from the beginning? I don`t know if a) I`d be motivated enough (I joined a gym and have hardly used it) or b) if i would know if I was doing it correctly.
Also does anyone meditate at home (again I mean they have taught themselves)
Any advice would be greatfully appreciated!
Thanks
Jo x

I've done yoga at home. If you get a video to follow they go through all the moves and explain it to you. You should watch the video once through before actually doing it yourself. You don't have to worry about going to classes. People will be paying attention to what they're doing and not you. But if you do it at home, you can take a nap right where you are when you're done and no one will tell you to leave. Nice

I don't have any info for ya on meditation. I've dabbled in it but not much.

Is a tape as effective as class? Which do you do?

I really can't afford classes, but I'm afraid I may not do the poses/breathing accurately and there won't be an instructor to correct me before I create bad habits.

I've never taken classes. I've only used videos at home. The videos I've seen explain everything very clearly and as long as you watch them through beforehand you'll see how everything is done. And your only supposed to do what is in your comfort level. As you gain more flexibility and strength, you can do more. So it's okay if you can't quite position yourself they way they do yet.

Hi, I've done both yoga classes and yoga at home with a video. I find at home is much better. You're comfortable, you can follow at your own pace (rewind if you can't quite figure out a move).

I found the classes were good, but very distracting. It's hard to concentrate on your breathing when the guy next to you sounds like a vaccuum cleaner. Also a lot of times, the yoga teachers would come over and try to force me further into the position and it hurt. I'm really not flexible, so I wanted to go at my own pace.

Maybe try both and see what you like?
Have fun!

You can find them all over the place. Any book/music store that carries videos, Target, eBay, Amazon, half.com.

I really like the Living Arts yoga tapes. I started with the Patricia Walden one Yoga for Beginners. I especially like the A.M. P.M dvd. I took a class at a local college one night a week that was extremely inexpensive through their continuing education program. Doing it with an instructor was very very good, because they can see what you are doing. This instructor was very gentle and nice. It's a different expereince, but both work very well.

I have been to a class and tried it at home since I posted that message, it was fun...but if I am honest I am far too lazy to keep either of them up.
