Does anyone have any suggestions for an alternative to dairy and soy yogurts? I've found coconut milk yogurt-would that be IBS safe? Or does anyone have a suggestion for what I could substitute for yogurt in recipes? Would fruit purees work? Any thoughts would be appreciated

If you are eating a coconut yogurt like the plain So Delicious it should be fine fat wise. It contains 4.5 grams of fat per 114 grams of product or 4% fat which is not too bad. However, it does contain inulin - a rapidly fermenting soluble fiber which can product a lot of gas.

Another great alternative is Almond Dream yogurt. I was eating the So Delicious coconut yogurt but had a problem with the inulin if I ate too much. I was so happy to find this had none Almond Dream Yogurt

OOooohhhh that might explain all the gas and discomfort I had with coconut yogurt. Where did you find the Almond Dream yogurt?

Thanks for your replies/ideas. Unfortunately neither of those brands, or any rice/nut yogurts, seems to be available in the UK. I have found a coconut milk yogurt without Inulin called COYO that I might try and track down at a health food store.

I live near Milwaukee, WI and have found the Almond Dream in several stores...both regular grocery stores and co-op stores. I asked our local grocery and they ordered it so now we have it closer to home as well. If you don't see it in your groceries you might ask if they can order. I think it just is a fantastic alternative yogurt and I have no gas or problems with it.

Thanks Syl. Having found Coyo I'm not convinced its a safe option. The ingredients are: Coconut milk 97.9%, tapioca starch, xylitol, selected probiotic cultures. Fat wise: 16g per 100g.

The fat content of 16% is perhaps a little high and the Xylitol could cause problems. Any thoughts?

Yes - the fat content in that coconut yogurt is very high. Xylitol belongs to the sugar alcohols like sorbitol and mannitol which is a FODMAP and it can be IBS unfriendly.

I've also found an almond 'yogurt.' (Ecomil dessert) It's mostly composed of water and sugar. Ingredients: Water, raw cane sugar, almonds(7.5%), corn maltodextrin, tapioca starch, thickner:carob bean flour, natural vanilla flavouring, curcuma extract.

Fat wise it's 4g/100g which I think would be fine. The sugar content is 12g/100g. I think anything above 15g/100g sugar is considered high.

Any thoughts on the other ingredients?

That looks like an interesting product. A quick Google seems to show it is only available in the UK. Do you live in the UK? It looks ok - not sure what 7.5% almonds means but I suspect is means 7.5% almond milk. It doesn't seem to contain IBS unfriendly ingredients and the fat content looks reasonable.
