Hi,

is there any reason to believe that that orange juice makes IBS worst?

Thanks

If it is too harsh for your stomach it could cause you problems. I can't drink orange juice because I also have GERD and the acid just sends my stomach crazy. I have even tried low acid orange juice in the past but that didn't help me so I haven't had any in years.

I've never been able to drink it. I can eat oranges, but not have orange juice.

Orange Juice HURTS! The fresher it is the more it hurts. OJ on an empty IBS stomach is torturous, If you MUST have some OJ have a little, after a full tummy of safe food.

It definitely brings on cramps in me if I am not very careful.

Me too, for some reason if I drink the stuff at night or late in the day it gives me some wicked GERD. Stopped drinking it around those times, but in the morning with a breakfast or eating it anytime seems fine.

Paraphrased from Heather's "The First Year - IBS":

Fruit juices are a problem for IBSers because of the fructose, which can cause gas, bloating, and diarrhea. You can get a lot of fructose down very quickly by drinking juice, whereas with the whole fruit you can't get as much fructose down as fast.

In addition, oranges are acidic, which can cause both upper and lower GI distress.

Heather says to treat fruit juices and acidic fruits as you would insoluble fiber - consume carefully, in smaller quantities and with soluble fiber.

HTH.
