Kit Description

Our diet kits offer the immediate, tangible help you need to take control of IBS through a dietary approach. This kit includes:

Eating for IBS book, by Heather Van Vorous
Diet plays a direct role in gut function, and the abdominal pain, diarrhea, constipation, and bloating from bowel disorders can be directly controlled through diet. This is true not just for Irritable Bowel Syndrome, but also for inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) such as Crohn's and Ulcerative Colitis, plus diverticulosis and diverticulitis. The Eating for IBS diet can make the difference between living a normal, happy, outgoing life versus spending every day stuck in the bathroom enduring pain, bowel dysfunction, and misery.

Contrary to what many believe, eating for IBS and IBD does not mean deprivation, never going to restaurants, boring food, or a limited and therefore unhealthy diet. It does mean learning to eat safely by realizing how different foods physically affect the GI tract, and how foods can help or hurt both diarrhea AND constipation, as well as abdominal pain, bloating, gas, and nausea. Foods can either prevent or trigger IBS or IBD symptoms.

For example:

* There are two kinds of fiber...one soothes the colon and regulates gut function but the other can cause severe attacks

* Dairy is a common trigger...even in people who are not lactose intolerant

* Peppermint, chamomile, and fennel can prevent pain, spasms, and bloating better than some drugs

* Bland foods are not automatically safe foods

In Eating for IBS, Heather Van Vorous, who has suffered from IBS for over 20 years and gradually learned to control her symptoms through dietary modifications, offers sympathetic information tailored specifically to the needs of IBS and IBD sufferers. She provides a comprehensive overview of IBS, explicit eating and cooking strategies, travel and restaurant advice, daily menus, supermarket ideas, and 175 delicious recipes. How delicious? Eating for IBS was a finalist for the IACP (International Association of Culinary Professionals) Health and Special Diet Award - also known as the "Julia Child" award.

IBS and IBD sufferers will be thrilled to discover that they can enjoy traditional homestyle cooking, ethnic foods, rich desserts, snacks, and party foods - and don't have to cook unusual or special meals for themselves while their families follow a "normal" diet. Eating for IBS will forever revolutionize the way people with bowel dysfunction eat - and live.

Heather's Tummy Tea™ Fennel ~ A Medical Food for the Dietary Management of IBS

Clinical studies have shown that fennel, as part of the diet, helps regulate contractions of the small intestine and aids gas expulsion. Fennel also relaxes the gut, which can relieve spasms of the GI tract. As a result, fennel assists in the dietary management of IBS symptoms, and is exceptional for IBS bloating, gas and abdominal pain. Fennel is also a traditional digestive aid for colic, heartburn, indigestion, and stomachaches.

Heather's Tummy Tea™ is packed in very generous quantities because it is meant to be used daily as a medical food for IBS; brew a delicious cup of tea several times a day, every day, as part of your dietary management of IBS symptoms.

Heather's Tummy Tea™ Fennel is unique because it is formulated to contain a high volatile oil content and whole seed size (both factors are integral to the quality and potency of fennel); it is harvested and packaged to be as fresh as possible; and it is processed for minimal volatile oil disspation. It is the volatile oils in fennel that make it so effective for the dietary management of IBS symptoms, particularly bloating and gas.

Our fennel is certified organic and is guaranteed to be the freshest, strongest, and most delicious fennel tea available! If you're used to drinking fennel tea from store-bought tea bags, you'll find the difference in strength and taste of Heather's Tummy Tea™ nothing short of astonishing.

Fennel's primary volatile oils are are anethole, fenchone, and estragole. Anethole is known to have a relaxing effect on the intestine. Fennel also has antioxidant and antimicrobial properties.

Fennel's documented use goes back to ancient China, and the plant is mentioned in virtually every European work on herbal medicines from ancient times to modern day. The mild licorice-flavored seeds are native to the Mediterranean, were known to the ancient Greeks, and were spread throughout Europe by Imperial Rome. In the 1st century A.D. Pliny attributed 22 healing properties to fennel. According to Chaucer, the 14th century English poet, fennel was one of the nine holy herbs of the Anglo-Saxons.

The United States once listed fennel as an official drug to be used for digestive problems, and today the herb is still used daily as an after-dinner digestive aid from India to Italy to Spain. Fennel is classified as GRAS (generally recognized as safe) by the FDA - there are no limitations on its use as a daily digestive aid. Fennel is so safe it's even used to treat infants with colic.

Fennel tea (like all of Heather's Tummy Teas™) is naturally caffeine-free, as it does not contain any actual tea leaves (tea is a specific plant, even though other herbal drinks are commonly called "teas"). The stronger you brew this tea the more effective it will be. Lightly crushing the seeds before brewing them with hot water will increase their strength.

Fennel tea can be sweetened with a little honey or plain sugar if you wish but I also think it's delicious plain. It can be chilled into iced tea, but remember that ice-cold beverages on an empty stomach can trigger GI spasms, whereas the heat in hot teas is in and of itself a muscle relaxant. The stronger the fennel tea, the more pronounced its beneficial effects on your digestion, so don't be afraid to make a dark brew!

All of Heather's Tummy Teas™ are certified kosher. The certifying authority is the Kosher Certification Service of Los Angeles, CA, whose seal is accepted by Circle U, Circle K, Kaf-K, and others.

Heather's Tummy Tamers™ Peppermint Oil Capsules - 2 Bottles
90 Enteric coated capsules per bottle
Active ingredients: Peppermint oil, Fennel oil, Ginger oil
No gluten, FODMAPS, or additives

Heather's Tummy Tamers™ Peppermint Oil Capsules are a medical food for the dietary management of Irritable Bowel Syndrome. They are specially formulated to address global IBS symptoms through the synergistic effects of peppermint, fennel, and ginger oils.

Peppermint oil capsules, as part of the diet, have been clinically proven to help IBS symptoms, even in children.

*Peppermint, as part of the diet, helps relieve abdominal pain, diarrhea, and urgency from IBS. Menthol and methyl salicylate, the main active ingredients of peppermint, have calming effects on the stomach and intestinal tract.

Although peppermint is such a powerful smooth muscle relaxant that it can trigger GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) or heartburn in people who are susceptible, because Heather's Tummy Tamers™ Peppermint Oil Caps are enteric coated they do not dissolve in the stomach. Instead, they pass through the digestive tract intact until they reach the intestines. For this reason, Heather's Tummy Tamers™ Peppermint Oil Caps are often very helpful for people with both reflux and IBS who cannot tolerate peppermint in other forms (such as teas or foods).

*Fennel, as part of the diet, helps regulate contractions of the small intestine and aids gas expulsion. Fennel also relaxes the gut, which can relieve spasms of the GI tract. As a result, fennel assists in the dietary management of IBS gas, bloating, and abdominal pain. Fennel is exceptionally beneficial for bloating and gas.

*Ginger contains powerful digestive enzymes, and is helpful for a wide variety of gastrointestinal ailments.

Heather's Tummy Tamers™ Peppermint Oil Capsules are considered a medical food, and they are specially formulated to address global IBS symptoms through the synergistic effects of peppermint, fennel, and ginger oils.

Serving Size: 1 capsule

Enteric coating allows the capsules to pass through the stomach without dissolving and release the three herbal oils within the intestines.

Ingredients: Peppermint Oil Extract, Ginger Oil, Fennel Oil, Gelatin, Soybean Oil, Glycerin, Enteric Coating, Water and Carob.

Contains no: sugar, salt, yeast, wheat, gluten, corn, milk or preservatives

Directions: Take one capsule, one to three times daily. Take on an empty stomach one hour before eating. Alternately, take right before a meal. Do not chew.

Suggestions
Please make the wheat, Gluten, soy, and yeast and nut free. While IBS,doesn't cause gluten issues,I do have both IBS and gluten sensitivity and probably others do as well. My grandmother died of celiac disease and I don't want to get celiac disease so I can't take the peppermint capsules I bought because they are not gluten free. I also can't use most of the recipes because they are not gluten and soy free. I can't have soy because it makes too much estrogen in your body. You probably need to advise people that IBS might not be their only proble, and that some of the foods that are suggested can cause other problems. I am enjoying the fennel tea though.

Heather says: Feedback Rating
Hi there Bonnie,

I'm so glad you are enjoying the Fennel Tummy Tea, that is lovely to hear! I'm so sorry for any confusion or disappointment with the peppermint oil caps and gluten. All of products, including the Tummy Tamers peppermint oil capsules, are inherently completely gluten free, and there is no chance for any cross contamination where they are manufactured. The oil-filled soft gel manufacturing facility we use for peppermint capsules is actually regulated by pharmaceutical (not dietary supplement) standards. All lines in the process are completely closed, the lines themselves are within closed rooms, and there is an 8 hour process of cleaning all machines and rooms in between product runs. There is also no chance for cross contamination in our facility, where the gels are packaged, as we do not package anything containing gluten or allergens at all.

We added the allergen statement voluntarily, and quite recently. It is not required, but our policy is to give as much information about our products as possible.

If you are still unsatisfied with the Tummy Tamers, you are welcome to return them to us. You can also always return the Eating for IBS cookbook if you are unsatisfied.

Our products are medical foods meant to be used under a physician's supervison. IBS cannot be self-diagnosed. IBS symptoms are similar to the symptoms of many other conditions, some of which may be life threatening if left untreated. It's critical that everyone who may have IBS be properly diagnosed, so they know exactly what they are dealing with.

Most people with IBS do not have a gluten or soy intolerance, although many people with the genetic gluten intolerance of celiac do develop IBS as a result of the chronic insult to the gut when celiac is left undiagnosed and untreated. If you have celiac in your family you should absolutely have the blood test for gluten antibodies so you know if you have celiac or not, as this is an inherited auto-immune system disorder. You need to be eating gluten for 4-6 weeks before the test, though, or you could get a false negative.

We try to make our recipes as inclusive as possible, so they do include gluten and soy, as the recipes are really specifically for IBS and not for celiac or for food allergies. You are always welcome to modify and substitute when working with IBS recipes to fit your specific needs. Soy actually lowers the circulating human estrogen levels in the body, because it has plant estrogens (phytoestrogens). Those phytoestrogens lock onto estrogen receptors in the body, so that human estrogens cannot, with the result that more human estrogen is excreted. Researchers suspect this is why soy is associated with lower risks of breast and reproductive cancers. But you can absolutely work around exluding soy, gluten, and any other restrictions with the IBS diet - it can be not just possible but delicious!

Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any questions, including ideas for recipe modifications. We are always happy to help!

Best,
Amanda

Great Products, even with the extra cost of delivery to the UK
Having just been diagnosed with IBS (relatively late in life, at 63), I have been recommended your tummy tea by my American Godmother - and have enjoyed it when staying with her. The peppermint capsules have been a great help. I take one first thing in the morning before breakfast and it calms my tummy. I'm not sure how useful the book will be, but it makes an interesting read. My IBS seems to be stress rather than diet related.

Heather says:
Hello Dr. Gilberg - I'm so sorry you are unhappy with the products. Please know you are welcome to return anything, at any time, for any reason, for a full refund.

The Fennel Tummy Tea is meant for quick relief of gas and bloating, while the peppermint oil capsules are best for preventing IBS pain and spasms.

If you are primarily trying to address other symptoms, such as constipation or diarrhea, these products may not be the best fit. You are welcome to contact us for more information and suggestions.

We strive to offer the highest quality products at the lowest possible prices, and we always offer a full money back guarantee. We would never take advantage of our customers, or anyone suffering from IBS, in any way. Please let us know if we can help you at all.
