Re: Serotonin Info -question for ShawnEric

Hi, Shawneric,

Thanks so much for all this very interesting info you're serving us 'on a plate'! A lot to read and digest though and once my intellectual capacities are exhausted I gratefully return to your personal explanations - for the first time I kind of understood what 5HT3 and 5HT4 are doing!

All this is very abstract and scientific, but this explanation for IBS makes perfect sense to me for my own case. I've got it all, the hypermotility, the visceral hypersensitivity and the low pain threshold (though, fortunately, only rarely the D-attacks). It also explains the strange phenomenon reported by IBS sufferers that things, i.e. certain foods, can sometimes trigger attacks, sometimes not, because the culprit is not the particular food but the biochemical conditions it encounters in our bodies that trigger the attack, isn't it?

My GI calls me 'his show piece' (actually he calls me 'his parading horse', not very flattering, but you don't say that in English I hope?) because I'm such a textbook case, in particular because my IBS is triggered by everything (foods, stress, viruses of any kind, hormone fluctuations, etc) and my pain threshold gets so low that NOTHING helps apart from soluble fibre supplements (relatively) and my Serotonin medication.

Now my technical question, I still don't quite understand how pure Serotonin (or its precursor L-5-Hidroxytryptophan) does effectively (and within a day) does lessen my symptoms (within a day!) if it's directed at the brain rather than the gut? (It aims at rising the intercellular concentration of Serotonin in the brain) Do you think it works on the spinal cord level like the tricyclic antidepressants??

I can also relate to the 'onset' of IBS symptoms being i.e. a stressful period and once the damage is done it's done and I can be as long-term relaxed as I like, all in all the threshold stays low. I still haven't quite understood whether there is a kind of 'damage' in the brain? Or does research suggest that the changes in the brain are just a result of the communication problem? Or maybe they don't know yet?

Also, in all the research I have only found very little mentioning of how and if and whether this communication problem between gut and brain can get better again, that is the threshold getting back to a more normal level. I guess we'll have to wait for more research to be done there.

Well, the speciality of mankind is that we can heal, so for now I will look further into the self-healing powers of hypnotherapy before I give up hopes....

Thanks once more for your help!

Susaloh
