Re: Serotonin Info - Answer to Heather's question

Hi Heather,
First of all, thanks so much for caring so much!!!
I'm not quite sure whether you're right about Europe being ahead, I actually doubt it. I must say any doctor I've met here in Germany and in England was very well informed about IBS, not only from personal experience but also they had definitely done their homework and were on top of the current state of research, etc. Interestingly, IBS is in a bit of a 'coming out' phase here in Germany, in bigger cities they're holding 'IBS open days' at Universities and there are programmes on TV all the time.

But in Germany, as my GI keeps telling me, the ONLY designated IBS medication is the antispasmodic Mebeverine (Duspatal, Colofac). It's being prescribed to almost everybody with IBS. Actually, do you have an explanation why Mebeverine is not available in the States? It has fewer side effects (none) than the equivalent US medications and can be used long-term. I've often wondered whether it's a problem between pharmaceutic companies (lobbying)?!

The other medication they prescribe a lot is Iberogast which is actually a natural, plant medication but has been proven to be effective in the treatment of IBS in scientific studies. I know that some people in the States are getting and using it. Apart from that there are the usual anti-depressants.

As to the one I'm taking, it's called Cincofarm and the company's name is L.lepori (Angelini Group). However, the fact it was prescribed to me might rather be due to my sister's connections than to a general advanced stage of IBS knowledge in Portugal, because she sought advice from a colleague, who, maybe typically, was NOT a gastro-enterologist but a specialist for mental illnesses!!!
It's not a new medication at all either (it says 'information revised October 1994).
It think it's classified as a 'mild anti-depressant' and he actually wanted me to take the normal recommended dosis (300 mg) but my sister who is used to prescribing the 'normal' tricyclic antidepressants thinks that I should experiment with a very low dosage.
(I think the 'common' doctors (that is not experts) here in Europe have learned one thing from the Lotronex experience, that is to be very cautious when 'messing about' with Serotonin levels, be it in the gut or in the brain. ) So I've started yesterday taking one capsule of 100 mg of L-5-LTP in two portions (instead of three capsules per day) and the pain and acute cramps are not gone but have calmed down considerably allowing me to slowly add some protein and fat back to my rice. It's my lifesaver because I've lived like that before for weeks and there's no way of getting out of this cycle, I can't eat but malnutrition doesn't help balancing out body processes!! Well, I will stabilize and then manage just with diet and without medication again...

Thanks once more

Susaloh
