Well, I do know what the problem is but I cannot share it on this forum.

OK, I understand. I'll call.
Be reassured that I am not freaking out about this - by your response I'm thinking perhaps it seemed that way! I'm very positive about where we are going and I see all the progress that has been made, which is why I was sure to mention it in my post.

If I gave you a time parameter, then would you watch your daughter to see if she met it, exceeded it, etc.

Perhaps.
But what I was hoping for was information to help me see where the line is between supporting her in keeping open to all positive possibilities and crossing over into the land of the grossly unrealistic - which could cruelly set her up for disappointment (need I add, disappointment which could mean emotional turmoil, which could feed ibs!). This is the line I walk these days. My natural tendency is to the positive side so I speak of it to her with full integrity, yet without concrete info, I'm not always sure where to point her when she is feels frustrated about where she is. To someone her age, it's one thing for mom to be droning on AGAIN about "it's OK for anything to take as long as it takes, blah, blah, blah" and quite another to be able to point to the real life results from someone else whose case was also severe. She's astute/old enough to expect facts. Sometimes she thinks that I focus on the encouraging/positive things just because I'm her mom and that's what moms do (which is certainly true), rather than because there is real reason to be encouraged (also true, I believe). Occupational hazard of mom duty, you know!

thanks for being available,
kem (daughter w/ibs-d)
