It took me a couple of weeks to get to the point where I wasn't dragging during the day or had a difficult time getting up in the morning. When I first starting taking Elavil I would go to bed early so that I was sure to get at least 8 hours of sleep. With any new medication it does take a while to get into your system and start working. I have heard that you should give a new med 30 to 90 days to see if will work.
