I've been reading Heather's website for many years--first Heather's general guidelines, which I had printed, cut into paragraphs, and carried with me everywhere long before I had a smartphone......and then the diet posts--which helped me with many questions. I was diagnosed with IBS-A almost 30 years ago. As Heather and others would probably verify, those were the days when the doctor would say "eat more fiber--whole wheat, bran, psyllium, etc." and that was the extent of treatment. And maybe meds such as amitriptyline and Levsinex. Wow! Has diagnosis and treatment come a long way since then! I just wanted to say to some posters that write
it is confusing to read all the conflicting advice.....IBS is an INDIVIDUAL condition. What works for one may not work for another. I feel so much compassion for any of you that are still searching for answers. And I know that sometimes too much information is not helpful, but hang in there. For many years I was lying on the bathroom floor in agony for more nights than I care to remember! Some of y'all know what I'm talking about! Then I found this website and these boards and I was able to come up with an eating plan that worked. I still mess up.....last night I had 2 T. of cooked peaches and suffered with gas and bloating for most of the night. I knew better, but I ate them anyway cause I haven't had peaches in years and just wanted to taste them! So much help on here! You just have to be your own detective and put together what you need. I know you've read this before....start with the blandest food you can and slowly add to it. You can be in control of your body! (I still haven't found a Dr. that knows much of anything about IBS--unless he has it, too!)
