Hi All
I discovered this forum a few years ago, and found the diet helpful for myself. A few months ago I moved in with my elderly parents, to take care of my Mom who has multiple health issues, including IBS. Her Gastro doctor put her on the non-fodmap diet to help her IBS symptoms. I decided to go with the program, they are attached to their eggs and red meat and I knew those would have to go with Heather's diet. I'd never heard about Fodmap, it's been a few years since I've read these forums. After a few months she seemed to stabilize somewhat. We were almost stable enough to try adding foods back in. Then her Rheumatologist put her on Tylenol, and her constipation got even worse from it. She has IBS constipation with lots of bloating and pain episodes. Now her symptoms are flaring up again, probably from higher doses of magnesium that we have to give her to get her to go. Miralax was even worse when we tried it, and Colace did nothing at all. I haven't been able to get her onto Acacia much yet, we are increasing very very slowly (when I first tried, she seemed to get pain from it). I only give her an eighth of a teaspoon twice a day right now.
About 3 weeks ago I started giving her the Tummy Tamers. She has a very hard time swallowing them, her other meds are ground up and mixed with food. I know I can't really grind up those enteric coated peppermint pills. Any ideas on that problem?
Her symptoms haven't lessoned yet, even though I added Heather's diet a couple days ago. Yesterday all she had for breakfast was oatmeal made in rice milk and almond milk, yet she still had pain later in the morning despite feeling OK on waking up. We are only giving Magnesium at bedtime, and she went fine on waking up yesterday, so I would think the laxative would have been out of her system by late morning. This morning she had cream of rice. She can't swallow any more, so has all pureed foods. Lots of homemade soups, before with meat and potatoes and carrots, now on the IBS diet with chicken breast instead.
Any advice? I might try to find another Gastro doctor, her current one only knows the non-fodmap diet and has no more ideas right now. He blew me off when I tried to mention Heather's diet.
Thanks
