The amount of sugar in a banana increases as it ripens. The starches are converted to sugars. The ratio of fructose to glucose changes. The starches are primarily soluble fibers which is useful for managing IBS. I try to eat them while the starch content is high but the banana is not too firm

As for the syrup and protein powder - I find any food containing artificial flavours to be a problem. The whole area of food chemicals and its effect on IBS has not been studied but there are hints that they can may play a role. The Monash group that developed the low FODMAP diet is actively studying this area. They are about to do a series of blogs on the topic

In summary I stay away from prepared things like syrups, protein supplements and even prepackaged foods particularly given that things like syrups and protein supplements so easy to make from basic ingredients that I know are 100% IBS safe for me - and they are much less expensive .
