Sandy -

All the drinks at Starbucks are made up on the spot - they have the separate ingredients and do the mixing after you order your drink.

The chai Starbucks uses is a concentrated liquid that comes in an aseptic cube - a lot like a carton of soy. It's put in a dispenser that has a pump. When you order your drink the concentrate is put in the bottom of the cup - 2 pumps in a short (8oz cup), 3 in a tall (12oz cup), 4 in a grande (16oz cup), 5 in a venti (20oz cup).

What goes into a chai latte?

The pumps mentioned above, then, it's traditionally filled with hot water to about the top of the siren on the cup (over half, but not 3/4 full) and then they put either steamed milk or steamed soy into the chai/hot water. Foam on top.

A standard, off the menu, chai will have more water in it than anything else. Then soy or milk would be the second most, with the tiny volume of chai being the least amount of anything in the cup.

When I order mine, I don't have them put water in it as it dilutes the taste too much for me and always have one more pump of chai in it than whatever is standard for the cup size. So I get chai concentrate +1 and steamed soy.

Does that make sense?

If you get a hot chocolate it's going to be the same number of pumps mentioned above and then the rest of the cup is filled with either steamed milk or steamed soy. (And whip cream with chocolate drizzle if you don't ask them to hold that back).

The chocolate they use IS vegan, by the way.

Most of the drinks (unless it's an Americano or brewed coffee) are made up, predominantly with whatever type of 'milk' you choose - whole/ff/organic or soy.
