I've had IBS for more than 30 years and have just over the past year discovered this website (thank you). I find it difficult sometimes to avoid heartburn, especially when dealing with fruit. Baked apples are now off my safe list. They didn't bother me 6 months ago. Any suggestions?

I just had an endoscopy done in March, which indicated GERD and a hiatal hernia, which I have had for 30 years. I sleep with the head of my bed up and try not to eat any thing about 2-3 hrs. I am on Prilosec which he increase to twice a day and it has helped. If I get hungy in the eveninng I snack on rice chex. I can't drink any jucies anymore. It's water or soy milk, which has been good. I'm going to try to make ice tea for this summer that Heather recommends.

I have severe GERD as well as Hiatal Hernia, and there's two things that really help. Number one is taking Zegerid, which is basically Prilosec formulated with baking soda. If Prilosec doesn't do the trick I would ask your GI about Zegerid.

Number 2 is diet. I have found that avoiding all chocolate/cocoa (yes, even fat free cocoa powder), tomatoes/sauce, citrus, ascorbic acid/vitamin c and the obvious coffee and alcohol makes a huge difference. I can tolerate the amount of C in my multivitamin, and that's about it. Cocoa was what really got me before, I was eating IBS safe brownies and cocoa flavored things all the time, and I realized what it was doing to my GERD. Apples don't bother my acid, but I agree fruit in general doesn't always feel great when you already have heartburn. Starchy foods like cereal, bread and potatoes seem to absorb the acid.

IBS A (more D than C). Severe GERD & Hiatal Hernia as well.

Thanks to both of you. It's actually nice to know that someone else has the hernia issue as well
