I have an awesome recipe for onion dip and as long as onion soup mix is o.k. then i'm set to go
500ml imitation sourcream(light if possible)
1 pkg onion soup mix crushed
2tbsp fat free mayo
Combine all ingredients mix well and refrigerate. The longer it refrigirates the better(softens and releases flavour from onion soup mix)mix before serving. keeps for at least a couple of days(mines never lasted longer ha ha)
oven roast potatoes: peel and cube as many potatoes you need
place in oven proof dish, coat w/ 1-2 tsp oil,pur crushed pkj of soup mix toss and bake at 350F for 45 min. keep an eye the last 15 if too dry add a little water or cover with foil. Good with cheese sprinkled on(roast potato skins without the skins anyone?
Also any tips on jazzing up my plain toffuti cream cheese

I looked at Lipton Onion Soup Mix and a local store brand onion soup mix and they both had MSG in them. Maybe this is one of those items that is safer outside the US than in.

I've always stayed away from Onion soup mix because of the MSG, too.

I'll have to track some of this down - I've got a recipe I've been wanting to try that calls for Onion Soup Mix.

Has anyone ever tried cooking with this? I wonder if it works the same as the usual Liptons. It certainly would be nice to be able to use Onion Soup Mix again!!

Fantastic Foods has now discontinued their French Onion Soup and Dip Mix. I did some poking around and found these possibilities - none of which I've tried yet:

Kosher On-Line - It looks like these guys only ship in Canada

Healthy Eating - This looks very promising because they're a vegetarian resource. I've emailed them to ask for a list of ingredients in this product. Update as of Sept 4, 2007: I heard back from the company and it looks like this is safe. It contains: Organic Onion,Organic Maltodextrin,Sea Salt,Organic Garlic,Organic Black Pepper. You use it just like you would Lipton Onion Soup Mix.

Monster Marketplace - Oddly, all their French Onion mixes have MSG or a variant of MSG; however the onion mixes shown on this page all look MSG-free except for the Roasted & Toasted one

I've also found some recipes for making your own Onion Soup Mix. I'll post those after I've reviewed them.

If anyone else knows of a non-MSG Onion Soup Mix, please post the brand and where you can find it.

Thanks.
