1 cup sugar
1/2 cup cocoa
1/2 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup water
1/2 teaspoon vanilla

Mix sugar, cocoa, salt and water in a saucepan. Heat until boiling, stirring constantly until everything dissolves. Remove from heat and add vanilla. When it has cooled down, pour into a clean chocolate syrup squeeze bottle. (I bought a squeeze bottle for about a $1.00).

For a glass of chocolate milk, add 1-2 tablespoons syrup. Great on desserts.

Have you ever read what is in Hershey's syrup? It sounds like a chem. experiment. I was thinking of trying organic which is like $6 where I shop. I am definitly going to try your recipe!!!

Last year my 7 year old daughter was on the Feingold Diet (feingold.org). Both my girls have ADHD..and this diet elliminates food coloring, preservatives etc. This is where I got this one from - wish I could take the credit - lol. Even though my girls aren't on it anymore (they take meds instead) we still use the chocolate sauce - it is yummy. Enjoy:-)

IBS-A for 20 years with terrible bloating and gas. On the diet since April 2004. Remember this from Heather's information pages:
"You absolutely must eat insoluble fiber foods, and as much as safely possible, but within the IBS dietary guidelines. Treat insoluble fiber foods with suitable caution, and you'll be able to enjoy a wide variety of them, in very healthy quantities, without problem." Please eat IF foods!

This is very similar to the Better Than Hershey's recipe but it has a higher proportion of chocolate (always a good thing) and the little bit of instant coffee makes it taste even more chocolate-y and gives it almost a bittersweet taste. I found it a little thinner than I like while still warm but it seems to have thickened somewhat after chilling overnight.

I store it in a glass jar in the fridge.

Chocolate Syrup

Show: Barefoot Contessa; Episode: Boss for Dinner

3/4 cup cocoa powder, sieved
Pinch kosher salt
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 cup water
1/2 teaspoon instant coffee granules {Use decaf!}
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Combine the cocoa, salt, sugar and 1 cup of water in a medium saucepan and bring to a boil. Add the coffee granules, and simmer for 5 minutes. Pour the syrup into a bowl and add the vanilla. Cover and refrigerate until ready to use.
