Does anyone else have to take antibiotics frequently? And if so, do they cause you D? I know mine do and I'm not sure how to compensate with food or supplements to make it not so hard. Any suggestions? KAL

I have been taking acidophalus all the time and it seems to work well with antibiotics to help keep the right amount of good bacteria in my stomach. You might want to do a search on that because I know others have taken it too with some luck. I buy mine OTC a a drug store and it's call Nature's Bounty chewable acidophalus (sp?) with bifidus. Sounds horrible but really they taste great and have made me feel pretty good. They have to be refrigerated after opening.

Hi Kal,
I'm a D and often get urinary tract irritations, requiring antibiotics (but not on a daily basis, thank goodness!). I can't say that I recall having more D than normal when on antibiotics. Neither did I have D when I took antibiotics for my diverticulitis. So I'd have to say no -- at least for me.
When I have D but no cramps, Lomotil works well -- but so does Immodium. Have you tried either?

Bevrs- Imodium has saved my life more than once, but it seems like when I take it, even 1/2 a pill, it throws me from the Big D into the Big C and I'm a mess for days- I use it when I have no room for error, if you know what I mean! But for the long haul, it seems a bit much for me. I can't believe you have no problems when takiing antibiotics! You're so lucky- I cringe every time I think I have a UTI and will need to go back on them- I just plan on staying home alot! KAL

Thanks Debby. I had thought about investigating them, but never thought about the fact that they could counterract the antibiotics- Thanks for the tip! KAL

Probiotics are really a must if you're on antibiotics with IBS!
Also, apparently you can get Immodium (or rather Loperamide, the actual drug) in a liquid form so you can take tiny amounts. My GI doc mentioned it, but I never needed it.

I also use Immodium but only when I really need it because I also end up with the Big C and it's horrible. So if for some reason I do take an Immodium, I always up my water intake and my Acacia intake just a little for the next day or so. And I eat more insoluble fiber so I can keep things moving. But even then I'm sometimes really messed up from it.

I hate taking antibiotics, because I get horrible D! (as opposed to the pleasant kind I guess - just realized I did that! lol)
Anyway, next time I have to take them, I'm going to try the probiotics. But, I'm not sure how to take them. I do know you're not supposed to take them at the same time (like both in am). Maybe you take antibitioc in am, probiotic pm? Not sure on that part.
Oh yeah - if you check Imodium, it says to check with a doc/pharmacist before taking if you're on antibiotics. I don't know why, but just so you know.

I take my priobotics with food 2-3 times a day. It just depends on what kind you get and when you are supposed to take them. This way I feel like they are in my belly most of the time doing their thing, whatever it is they do in my stomach!....
