Ibs cooking mistakes I realized/food questions

went shopping and made tacos..well realized jennio turkey hamburgerhas1 170 calories and 120 from fat! Now wat is something I can find at wal mart or a grocery store that is turkey hamburger and less than 25% of my meat from fat?!

what ground,NON redmeat do u use for recipes, less than 25% calories from the fat in the meat? If more than 25% cal. fromfat is not allowed to follow the ibs diet, why are people eating soy cheese, and soy sour creme if the percentage of fat from calories is over $25?

I should have known something that tasted good and kept me from craving red meat and tacos/nacos so bad wasn't ibs safe. I guess people raving about jennio turkey products, and all the recipes that call for soy sour creme or soy cheese, fooled me. SInce I read jennio rool had %50 percent less fat than red meat, and that lots of people were eating jennio turkey hamburger,I didn't think twice about it.

made heather's guacamole recipe from her cookboox and realized after I put lemon juice in it,it was supposed to be lime!

oh and non dairy semi sweet chocolate chips, such as ghiradeli all natural brand I like, has 70 calories and 40% from fat!

I was so happy to find the only place in this town with soy cheese and sour creme,a mild yellow cheese called soya kass and toffuti sour creme. looks like the fat content percent from calories is too high and that there is casein and non dairy lactic acid, which is NOT safe right?

several questions,I guess. If less than 25% of cal. from fat is what you do to follow the ibs diet, why are so many people talking about how great jennio is and that they eat that,or soy cheese, toffuti sour creme cheese, the fat content is more than %25 of fat. calories,I wondered if they realized this..

Am I not getting something,is there a NON redmeat that is less than %25 cal. from fat? a ground turkey I can use for tacos or dishes like that? if so wat is a common brand at wal mart or a grocery store?

or am I wrong and u can eat jennio, soy cheese, soy sour creme, wat about the dairy free chocolate chips? ghiradell is all natural, but 70 calories and 40% from fat is wrong for ibs?

Am I mistaken or is one really high fat item ok to add in a recipe and doesn't matter?

You have to use ground turkey breast. Regular ground turkey has almost the same amount of fat as ground beef because they grind both the white and dark meat as well as the skin. Wal Mart sells ground turkey breast.

Maria - You need to use ground turkey breast or ground chicken breast rather than just ground turkey. Ground turkey uses breast meat mixed with dark meat - dark meat is full of fat.

The rule in IBS eating is to keep your entire meal with only 25% of your total calories from fat. So let's say you decide to make tacos for dinner - if you use ground turkey BREAST, that's 99% fat free. If you use soft corn tortillas, there is very little fat in those. This means that you have room in your meal for some extra fat calories in the form of soy cheese or soy sour cream. Make sense? If your whole meal is, let's say 500 calories, your whole meal should have no more 125 of those calories should be from fat. Don't forget to factor in fat calories if you use cooking oil to saute meat or veggies. Crispy taco shells will also be high in fat because they are fried, so it's probably best to use soft tortillas. Corn tortillas have much less fat than flour.

I don't know. I am also not a big fan of processed pressed meats. If that is process pressed meat, which I don't know for sure? I personally go for foster farms oven roasted real turkey. Turkey can also be high in trytophan which breaks dow to serotonin, although the breakdown is complex and many factors are involved in that as well.

Reviewing the product some it looks pretty good really. Doesn't say much about fillers or anything, but no hormones or steroids.

It does look like you can get all JENNIE-O extra lean ground turkey. Which loooks very low in fat.

http://www.jennieo.com/products/GroundTurkey/ExtraLeanGroundTurkeyBreast.aspx

The 85/15 Ground Turkey is much higher in fats.

http://www.jennieo.com/products/GroundTurkey/8515GroundTurkey.aspx

Some processed meats are also really high in sodium and that might make a person retain water more and feel more bloated.

Pork can be low in fat

Fat in Pork
Through changes in feeding and breeding techniques, pork producers have responded to consumer demand for leaner pork. Today's pork has 16 percent less fat and 27% less saturated fat than 15 years ago. Many cuts of pork are as lean as skinless chicken.
Trimmed pork tenderloin and skinless chicken breast have the same amount of total fat content. In addition, six cuts of pork in the chart have total fat content between the skinless chicken breast and skinless chicken thigh:

http://www.porkandhealth.org/NutriFat.aspx

Fats are important in diet in general and you have to get some fats from foods, you can eliminated all I personally feel.

Some of these qustions some others hopefully will address for you. I don't personally eat most of the things you posted here. I also personally eat diary and red meat and some others foods a lot of people don't here. But that is a personal thing I have found for myself. I don't have lactose intolerence either. Some foods that bother me personally I stay away from, a lot of frutose, soda, carbonated drinks and some others, I found I didn't tolerate well a long time ago. Sometimes a food might trigger my IBS and then another time it won't, depends on my state of mind, the food and other issues.

I am trained in french, swiss and American Northwest cooking and a lot of my recipes would be considered not IBS friendly, although I do have a lot of them that might be more IBS friendly.

Heather, is the one you should ask some of these questions too on specifics of the items you mentioned.

Perdue or Honeysuckle is what they sell at Wal Mart. It pretty much takes on the flavor of whatever you're cooking it with. Use it in spaghetti, tacos, meatloaf, burgers, chili etc.

Lemon is perfectly fine in guacamole. I interchange lemon and lime all the time in my mexican cooking.

Keep in mind that avocados, therefore guacamole is high in fat. It's good fat, but your IBS doesn't know the difference between good fats and bad fats (but your heart does). Be aware of how much other fat is in your meal when eating guacamole.

guacamole?

I know avacados are very high in fat?

"trytophan can that cause problems"

trytophan is the precursor to serotonin. Serotonin is a complex problem in IBS.

Video Corner: Serotonin

Increasingly our understanding of IBS is that it is a heterogeneous disorder – that is, multiple factors contribute to the well defined symptoms of the disorder. One of these suspected underlying dysfunctions involves serotonin, which is a neurotransmitter or messenger to nerves. Most serotonin in the body is in cells that line the gut where it senses what is going on and through receptors signals nerves that stimulate a response. The serotonin must then be reabsorbed (a process called re-uptake) into cells. This process appears to be disrupted in people with IBS.

When I have made guacamole I have used both lemon and lime, lime is more traditional I believe.

When I first started doing the turley thing I made the same mistake as you. I realized I had to look for ground turkey BREAST and I also use ground chicken breast. Both of these should be fine. Weight Watchers (which I can no longer do) were the ones who taught me the difference between ground turkey and ground turkey breast.

If you get the normal ground turkey it is mixed dark and white meat. It can be okay if you are stable and the whole meal stays low in fat. That is what I always cooked with. The better choice is the more expensive ground turkey breast. It comes in similar packaging but costs quite a bit more.

The dairy free products you found are safe. I'm glad you could find some. Don't overdo them; use as a topping.

IBS-A for 20 years with terrible bloating and gas. On the diet since April 2004. Remember this from Heather's information pages:
"You absolutely must eat insoluble fiber foods, and as much as safely possible, but within the IBS dietary guidelines. Treat insoluble fiber foods with suitable caution, and you'll be able to enjoy a wide variety of them, in very healthy quantities, without problem." Please eat IF foods!

A pound of meat will do at least 4 meals for one person, depending upon whether you make burgers from it, make chili with half of it and spaghetti sauce with the other half.

I guess it all boils down to whether you want to enjoy the meal and stay off of the toilet, or whether one uses a slightly less expensive meat and spend the next 24-48 hours ON the toilet.
