Hi, I get a lot of tension headaches in conjunction with my IBS. I take Tylenol Extra-Strength Ultra (Headache and Migraine Pain Relief), although frankly I don't find it does much. Just wondering:
1) What headache/pain relievers are the safest tummy-wise?
2) And which actually work? Perhaps I need a prescription medicaiton? I have a headache basically every day.

I have pretty frequent headaches too. I asked my doctor about it a while back and the only thing she could think of was to switch my birth control from Yasmin to Yaz. I'm not sure if that really helped though, it's hard to tell. The medicine that works best for me is Advil though, particularly the liquigels because they start acting a lot faster. I've heard some people can't tolerate ibuprofen though, but I've never really had an issue (not that I know of). My doctor said if I need to take headache medications every day, I should switch between that and something else (maybe tylenol or aspirin) but I don't really do that because the others don't seem to work for me and usually I just want my headache to go away ASAP!

as far as IBS goes, tylenol is supposed to be the safest. Ibuprofen and Aspirin are hard on the stomach. I take extra strength tylenol gel caps. Be careful because I was looking for something for migraines and alot of the pills marketed for that have caffeine in them. I would talk to your Dr about a prescription that is easiest on the stomach.

I've had chronic migraines for YEARS and have tried just about every migraine med out there. For the last few years I have taken Maxalt whenever I feel one coming on. I don't have any problems with it, and I assume that's because it dissolves in my mouth. They're pretty expensive if you don't have insurance, though. It's my miracle migraine drug!

Lisa Marie:

I too take Maxalt and it always makes my migraine disappear with either one or two doses.
To save money, I had them write me a prescription for the 10 mg pills (I like the pills better than the dissolving kind) and then broke them in half for each migraine. 5 mg seems to work for me... maybe it can work for you too?

The best OTC thing I have found for my tension headaches is Excedrin, but as it has caffine in it...it isn't IBS friendly.

You mat be suffering from rebound headaches if you are taking something every day. Rebound headaches are caused by the medications-even OTC like advil can do this. You should talk to your doctor about the possibility. You shouldn't get headaches every day-headaches aren't like arthritis or other daily conditions. Good luck!

Fortunately, the money isn't an issue for me; I just know it is for some. I get 24 pills for $20!!

Hear hear!! I second the Maxalt!! But, the headache has to be a migraine in order to help. I took one when it was a terrible sinus headache, it didn't help much because it wasn't a migraine. Expensive - YES, but they work. I have chronic migraines - 1 to 3 a week at times, sometimes none for a month!

If you are experiencing daily headaches you should consider being seen by a chronic pain specialist to diagnose why you are getting them. It could be a nerve, muscle, tension issue, or something more serious if they are this frequent. And get a CT or MRI done to confirm their diagnosis.

And watch, yes, rebound headaches because of too much OTC medication are often worse than that initial headache.

Best of luck to you!
