Has anyone else been discovering that they can't buy baked Tostitos at their regular grocery stores? I can't find them in their usual places in Denver. Were they taken off the market? Just wondering if anyone is experiencing the same problem.

I have not been able to find them for a very long time. I have been buying the tortilla chips at Trader Joe's or Reduced Fat Padrinos brand - both have 4 grams of fat.

I still have no problem finding them here in Canada. Strange that you can't find them in the US. Anybody visited the website to see if that will provide any info?

I haven't bought any in a long time, but the last time I was in the chip aisle, I saw pretty much every variety of baked chip there is, including the tostitos. That's pretty weird that you can't get them there!

I just called Frito Lay (the makers of Baked Tostitos and was told that they HAVE been discontinued, BUT good news is the new "scoop" shape will replace them starting in September, so you should be able to find them again really soon. I was told that there is NO change to them other then the shape!!

I cannot find them on the shelf here recently in Phoenix, so I bought "Guiltless Gourmet". Did you notice-they came out with some new ones that are called "Natural" and are shelved in the natural foods section-but they are still fried! GRR! Gotta read those labels!

I talked to a store manager of a major grocery store chain not long ago about them. He said it was one of those things that was regionally carried...that the company did studies on how much was selling where. If it wasn't a good seller in a region then no matter how often a manager tried to order them they wouldn't be available in certain areas. My home is one of those areas so I search for alternatives in the HFS.

The Baked Scoops have some oil and another ingreg. added to them.

Guiltless Gourmet (yellow, white, and blue corn) chips get only 14% of calories from fat and taste great. Also, Trader Joe's makes a Baked Blue Corn Tortilla chip that tastes even better and they get only 14% of calories from fat.

Based on what Shell found out (great sleuthing, Shell) the new Baked Tostito scoops get 25% of their calories from fat which is right at the upper limit. (And I agree with Jen about the old Baked Tostitos with no fat - I might as well have been eating the bag.)

A number of baked products have disappeared, and I just don't get it. I used to love baked Bugles, and they got pulled off the market a few years ago. They were so superior to the regular greasy ones. And now Tostitos are changing for the worse. Darn it.

Is this really a terrible thing? I mean, no, they aren't 100% perfect anymore, but I think they are still pretty much a safe snack. Plus, they actually taste REALLY good even though they are baked and not nearly as high in fat as regular chips. I have had 2 bags of them in the past month, eaten in moderation at each sitting, and have had absolutely no ill effects from them whatsoever.

What makes them so bad? Isn't the fat content low enough to be considered safe, or is it just safe for me? Please DO correct me if I'm wrong... I'm still relatively new to all this (8 months now).

I'll have to double ck our stores here in Redding, Ca as I just bought a couple of bags a month or 2 ago and my family loves them. i don't even eat regular chips anymore. Love the baked BBQ and will be real bummed if they do away with those. My kids also eat the baked sour cream & onion and baked Cheetos! What I like too about the BBQ is there isn't MGS in the baked lays.

Don't know if Heather, you will see this email but I have tried to post questions in hopes you will respond. I'd imagine you have alot of posts, etc.. to read and so on. I am looking for direction on a gastro vs not doing anything. i am 38 and my regular doc says I am too young to worry about colonoscopies, etc... and that it more than likely is just IBS. I am sure it is but should I see a specialist and be for sure? Nothing else has been ruled out.

You need to be tested for everything that must be excluded for an IBS diagnosis. The odds are that what you have is IBS but I wouldn't be willing to bet my life on not having any of the nastier illnesses that can mimic it.

Read the section on what tests you need to have and what illnesses must be ruled out, find a GI guy, and get it done. If you're female you also need to have a talk with your gynecologist about endometriosis and ovarian cancer. I just did a post about this here with links to the diagnosis info and a place to possibly find a decent doctor.

Sheesh!

I figure the new Baked Tostitos get 25% of their calories from fat. That's right at the top end of Heather's recommendation. Some people on the Boards need to keep their fat percent even lower than 25% and for them the new Tostitos would be a problem, but I would be fine with that as long as I wasn't eating them before lunch. So if you love them and they don't bother you I think it's fine.

HTH. Enjoy!

I am 23 and just had a colonoscopy. Noone told me I was too young. IBS usually manifests itself in late teens/early twenties anyway.

I'd say change your doctor, that guy seems like he wants to slack off and not bother with you.

I love those things! I actually went online as well and it let me choose what state I wanted to see if they were sold in... turns out one state away sells them still so I make a trip and stock up every once in a while.
I also just discoved the "Utz" brand of baked tortillas- they're not as good as Baked Tostitos but I find them much closer to the taste of Tostitos than to The Guiltless Gourmet brand.
Utz brand is really light and thin like tostitos are (was).
Maybe they have this brand near you- it's worth a try.

Well, Baked "Scoops" have appeared in Canada. I have to say they taste much better than the other ones but of course they would, they have a bit more fat in them. I wish they would sell both types though. I am sure there are lots of people who would buy both, like me!

I have a bag of Tostitos scoops right here. They have 3 grams of fat and are still safe. If your store is not carrying some product like this that they used to have make sure to talk with the grocery manager or helpers about this. Generally they will talk to their Frito Lay vendor or whoever, depending on what it is, and they will call you with an answer. Be patient, it might take some dilligence. Usually products that don't sell as well can still be brought in or sometimes you can buy a case (10 or 12) of something for yourself. Sometimes the product is not available anymore and nothing can be done but try to find it before it is gone elsewhere or find an alternative. The vendors just put out what sells best and so as trends change things disappear and if you inquire you might be able to get it.
