Anyone ever have undigested food in their stool?? This happened to me once a week and a half ago. I ate a grapefruit and the next day had pieces of grapefruit coming out looking exactly the way they did when they went in. As a result of this, my holistic MD is now referring me to a GI specialist because he think I may have a malabsorption problem.

I have had that problem before, but not for about a year. It happened when I was very unstable.

Does this happen to you frequently?

This has happened to me before, usually when I'm not stable or when I'm eating too many trigger foods. I know other people it's happened to. Unless you have another medical condition, it usually seems to be caused with food high in insoluble fiber (corn, lettuce, granola, etc.). However, since you haven't been formally diagnosed with IBS, I think it's good that you're being referred to a GI specialist.

Sometimes I see pieces of rice in my stool. It worries me because I know I must not be absorbing the nutrients. I thought a digestive enzyme would help, but it doesn't.

What would help this?

Grapefruit, oranges, about any type of lettuce, yep. Best eliminate these from your diet - at least for a while. Then add them back in VERY small quantities. I miss salads dearly. Sometimes I can get away with a small amount at the end of a meal and sometimes , well, it totally backfires on me.

Hi, Beth. I think it takes more than finding bits of undigested food in your stool to have a malabsorption problem. There are a lot of different malabsorption problems due to a range of conditions (from celiac to lactose intolerance).Usually with this problem stools would be pale, stinky, and sticky (I think this is common with celiac disease) or greasy stools.

I had the same concerns a year ago, but a complete blood chemistry test showed I was not suffering from malnutrition or even anemia. Stool samples would also show signs of malabsorption by measuring fecal fat.

I wouldn't worry about the rice. Maybe you need to do some more mechanical digestion - chew, chew, chew!

Ah Maria, You hit it on the nose with your last line. Chew,
Chew, Chew! Something like brown rice you have to chew the
heck out of it. Corn is even worse, even if you chew it to
death, you'll still see chewed up bits of yellow in your
stool. -Bob

Isn't this normal with insoluble fiber? I thought that "roughage" frequently passes undigested through the colon, hence the good old-fashioned "flossing" effect, lol!

If I don't chew my food, I see very obviously what it was, be it meat or plant or even egg white.

(Okay, I have to laugh because my father and I were talking about this--it disturbed him that I would see things so distinctly, even unchanged in colour, i.e. lettuce, parts of green beans, carrots, mushrooms, beets, corn/popcorn, zucchini skins/seeds, banana seeds, rice, potato skins/chunks, etc. if eaten without INTENSIVE HIGH POTENCY enzymes. I'm not good with cellulose/hemicellulose UNLESS I take those high potency enzymes. Otherwise it has that "zoom" effect on me. He said, for G*d's sake take the enzymes!!!) If I don't food process certain foods, they end up shooting right out of my butt, rather painfully in an explosive sequence of D attacks, so uh...be really careful & follow Heather's guidelines with IF & consider a high potency enzyme supplement. Yes, something more potent/powerful than "Beano.")

Kate, IBS-D.

Thank you for all the responses! This does not happen often to me.. it only happened that one time where I could recognize what it was.. although after eating whole-berry cranberry sauce on thanksgiving, i saw what looked like cranberry skins in my stool. I have started to take some digestive enzymes and so far they seem to be helping. I don't really think i have a malabsorption problem. My iron levels are high and I don't even have very watery stool. It's just loose sometimes. Hopefully whatever tests my GI orders will prove me right.
