I've recently returned to the board, and read that you suffered a stroke after a BM. Yikes! Does straining on the toilet really cause strokes? That's disturbing.

Glad to hear you're recovering!

since bob doesn't get to come on the boards too easily - from what i understand, in addition to (a *lot*) of straining, bob was also drinking large quantities of water very quickly (like 48 oz at once), which can spike your blood pressure very high. and when he did have his stroke, he was not only straining, but, i think, sort of jumping around to encourage some action. i think it all conspired to lead to the stroke, but there probably were other factors, too.

so be careful with blood pressure, distribute water throughout the day, and don't strain too much - aside from elevating blood pressure, it's not good for your gi tract, either.

Thanks for being part of the board and for helping so many people.

Hey, are you still taking some psyllium?

thanks, cyndy. i appreciate it.

i've actually been off of psyllium for a while - it was impossible to get any sort of significant dose. i'm taking fiberchoice now, and i'm really happy with it. there's a little gas each time i increase my dose, but it goes away, and the convenience is just great.

That's because Bob is under the watch of nurse guards.How-
ever, I've managed to escape at least once a day with a
variety of schemes. Today, I'm dressed up as Santa Claus,no
just joking, but I saw a guy dressed up as Santa, he must've
been going to the pediatric ward. But Jaime is quite correct
again. However, I did get yelled at by a nurse a couple of
days ago. After straining somewhat during a BM the nurse
took my BP which was 170/100, too high, and I hadn't pounded
any watery like fluids. Now, to be on the safe side, I don't
strain at all, and I'm also on BP med. You're not likely to
have a stroke by just straining. It's only dangerous for me
because I've already had one. The good news is, I've just
saved a bunch of money by switching my car insurance to
GEICO. But, seriously, I'm now taking two doses of Miralax
per day, and FINALLY Today I've had three good BM's without
straining. I'm becoming more and more convinced on Miralax.

OH my goodness, Bob! Be careful with that blood pressure. My grandpa had high blood pressure and died of a heart attack last year. Blood pressure is nothing to mess with, that's for sure. I'm really glad to hear that you're having good BM with the Miralax.

Thanks very much!! I'm out of the hospital now, and will start
out-patient physical and occupational therapy tomorrow. I
think it will be like three times a week. The people covering
my classes said they'll just finish them up, so I don't have
to teach until next semester, but I am in at school now,
obviously posting to these boards .The only downside
of getting out is that I'm not allowed to drive for a while
, maybe a couple of months. However, this is a good time
not to drive around here. Since we get so much snow, about
20 ft. per year, the roads are generally pretty crappy.I
also won't have to shovel out my car and truck. Right
now I'm staying at a friend's house who lives right near
school and riding in with him during the week and spending
weekends at home. -Bob

Hi Michelle, Don't worry, I'm being careful. They've finally
got me on high blood pressure medicine, and I'm taking it
every day, and my BP readings have been normal. Thanks for
your concern!- Bob
