Hi, I was wondering if anyone has researched the possible link between IBS symptoms and MSG? I was searching the web earlier trying to find a cause for my variety of odd-ball symptoms -- lately I have been having trouble sleeping because my arms turn completely numb. I also have chest pains that seem to come and go(it feels like quick knife stabs) for no real rhyme or reason. I also have joint aches -- my knees have two cysts and my whole legs ache after long car rides (long beingg anything longer than 30 mins.) I am only 21, and I feel like an arthritic 60 year old sometimes! (I used to be extremely active and played many sports before my first big flare up sophomore year in college) ON TOP of all this, I have the usual IBS symptoms, extreme abdominal pain, diarrhea, bloating, etc, which I seem to keep at bay by watching my diet. So far, after going to numerous docs I've only been diagnosed with IBS. SOO, back to the MSG thing...after typing in a few of my symptoms, I found this link:
Battling MSG website

It lists abdominal pain, cramps, bloating, colitis, IBS, chronic fatigue, sleep disorders and NUMEROUS other symptoms as all being caused by MSG. I'm going to investigate this, and try eliminating MSG from my diet....but could the solution possibly be so simple??

Hi - I haven't heard of MSG causing all the severe symptoms you're having, though it can certainly aggravate IBS for some folks.

I'm really worried about your symptoms - your arms going numb and sharp chest pains, plus achey joints, are NOT a part of IBS. I would make sure that your docs have tested you for inflammatory bowel diseases like Crohn's and ulcerative colitis, and for celiac as well.

Sometimes numbness and constipation are early symptoms of multiple sclerosis, but you have diarrhea instead, so I don't know what to make of that.

Please let me know how things go.

Best,
Heather
