My doc had me on these drinks too.I never heard of resource but I have had every other one I think imaginable.I'm usually ibs-c but sometimes after a long time of c I get d then c for weeks but I'm very underweight too. For me they made my c worse also bloated and like a brick in my tummy. I know weird but I seem ok with dairy in small amounts my friend can't tolerate drinks like this because she can't have dairy so watch out for that. As for weight issues I try to eat a lot of carbs,pb I do good with, the energy bars be careful of the seeds and nuts one. Some soups, with dense higher cal breads and cereals.Eating every few hours. I suggest a nutritionist mine helps so much she comes up with clever things.Take care.

spiru-tein... I have some here and my local HFS and vitamin stores both carry it.. its sy based and comes either premixed or as a powder to be added to soy milk.. all the others contain dairy in some form, even in their soy formulas (whey/cassein) unless something has changed from when I was looking for one of these a few years back. I find eating luna bars more often and eating more of the high carb breads and cakes in heathers book and on this site help a lot in maintaining/gaining weight... especially as i jump back on the training platform... as I expend calories I have to increase the intake of them.

I've just looked at the Spiru-tein ingredients and one of them is oat bran, I'm a bit worried this might affect my IBS? Anyone got any ideas?

Ok - I've just been to the health shop and bought (not sure if its available in the US) Holland & Barrett 90% Protein Powder, the ingredients are; Soya Protein Isolate, Egg White Solids, Brewers' Yeast, Flavouring, Emulsifier (Soya Lecithin), Pineapple Bromelain, Papaya Enzyme (Papain) - the only thing that concerns me on this one is the Brewers' Yeast, as I've not had this since I got IBS....so will let you know how I go! (if your interested!)

Old Fashioned Way Is Best For IBS new

Harmony:

I do not recommend these drinks for IBS people. There are too many worrisome ingredients in them from an IBS perspective. Some of these drinks contain ingredient lists that are a mile long -- 2.5 kilometres long in Canada!

With IBS, it's best to gain weight the old fashioned way -- through eating more frequent meals and through eating more starches and through eating more desserts.

I've managed to gain a few pounds, and I've done it without eating sweet stuff because I have blood sugar problems. What I do is just eat often. Today, I'm having a bagel smeared with Organic Earth Balance Buttery Spread and Heinz apple-strawberry sauce (which is like jam).

For lunch I have three huge, Fred Flintstone-sized (!) sandwiches, each made with two slices of French bread smeared with the Earth Balance spread and filled with mashed organic potatoes (a great source of soluble fibre) and slices of organic, additive-free Rowe Farm turkey (available at certain health food stores in the Greater Toronto Area). Sometimes I use mashed yams instead of mashed potatoes in my sandwiches.

I've already eaten my bagel. In two hours I will have my first sandwich, two hours after that another sandwich and two hours after that I will have my last sandwich. Later I'll have dinner and maybe another snack after that too.

Gaining/maintaining weight is a lot of work, but worth it if you can do it in a way that doesn't aggravate your IBS.

I weigh a blockbuster 85 pounds now! I'm very short (4-foot-8 1/2) so this is actually my ideal weight!

You are right about doing it the natural way! Although I get really upset seeing myself in the mirror, my ribs show and I just look hideous, so I get impatient! I haven't had a period for 3 months either, I always said that having them was a nightmare, but I'd much prefer having them and being my normal weight again! I noted you have monster sandwiches with potato and turkey in, that sounds absolutely delish and I'm going to try them!! Thank you for your post... Nicola (hamster69)

Nicola:

I totally understand what you're going through. At one point in my early 30s I dropped to a dangerous 74 pounds due to IBS agony from an antibiotic I took for wisdom tooth surgery.

At the time I didn't know I had IBS and my gastro-intestinal specialist recommended a high-calorie drink to help me gain weight. But when I saw the list of ingredients I was too afraid to try it. I was already getting sick from almost everything I was eating.

Exasperated with me, the specialist ordered me to eat a full-sized, round, eight-inch cake a day! I already had blood sugar problems at the time, but he was insistent!

I compromised by eating half of an eight-inch cake a day and it took an unbelievable three months of doing this to gain half of a pound! I remember jumping up and down on the scale when I realized I had gained the half-pound!

I hope your weight gain will be much faster than mine was!

Belinda
