I read this morning on the website for "phazyme" (a gas, bloating and pressure reliever) and it said that one of the causes for gas was eating too many carbohydrates or the bodies inability to process carbs. Considering that is all I have eaten for two days since I was wating white rice (what to eat when you can't eat anything) it makes all the sense in the world.

I wonder which is the lesser of two evils? Bloating, gas and pressure from eating from that list or general pain? I know all of our bodies are different but this was really eye opening for me. I ate white rice but not enough that you would think it would cause problems.

I have heard that also. And believe it to be true for many, but what Heathers suggestions do, is encourage us to mix the insoluble with the carbs. That somehow should balance it out. Its hard to know what's right when you are in pain. And you just want it to stop.

I hope I can explain this satisfactorily but if not, please, others help. The bacteria in your gut does feed on sugars and carbs that have made into sugars, yet that shouldn't be taken at face value. Some people go on complete gluten and carb free diets to avoid the production of gas in the intestines. This is an oxymoron because your gut cannot be healthy on that sort of diet. So the primary thing is to make your gut healthy and happy and then, even if you eat all carbs, you won't be gassy. And the only way to make it happy is to eat things that are gentle on it and give it something to grip, as Heather says. By stabilzing the gut with soluble fiber, which is easy to pass through, the reaction of producing gas will be minimized and this cannot happen without soluble fiber. My doctor could explain it much better. Remember there is a lot of conflicting and erroneous information out there. Even many doctors don't keep up to date!
Also studies show that the gas products like gas X and phazyme actually do not make a lot of difference to gas amounts in the intestines. They are marketed that way but they are only found to 1) break large gas bubbles into smaller ones 2) cause upper tract gas to be burped out. So carbs are the bad guys right now and Phazyme knows this and wants to scare people into buying their product.
I sure hope the forecasters are right about the low carb thing going out of style in 2005!

I also have read numerous studies and reports that say rice, potatoes, and grains in general are high gas producers. I have read books like "going against the grain" which explain how these grains cannot be easily digested and ferment in the body and increase gas in our bodies.

This also concerns me because this diet is so pro rice and potatoes. It is very confusing to know what to do when there is scientific proof that carbs do cause gas and bloat!

I'm in pain no matter what I eat. And find that phazyme does not help. Even the doctors and books say that things with semithicone (gas x and phazyme) really don't have a proven track record with IBS since they can't do much for gas already in the colon. (like Minnie explained better than I).

So what are we to think or do when all we want is relief! We want BM's, little gas as possible (well at least not enough to cause pain and agony) and less bloating. Should have put that on my Christmas list.

There is no proof at all that a low carb diet is good for your bowels. My GI specialist is completely against low carb diets. Taking away the gluten and carbs does not lead to less gas or bloat. In a labortory maybe sugars do make the bacteria feed and produce gas, but in a real body it doesn't work like that. Stabilizing the bowel functions is what leads to less gas and bloat. In other words, if I am stable and ate beans, cabbage, rice, potatoes, pears with skin, broccoli etc for dinner I wouldn't bloat much at all. But if I am not stable then anything I eat for dinner will lead to bloat, even after one bite. Stabilizing is the primary thing; not worrying about certain suspicious but healthy and recommended foods!

Thank you so much for your post!! I think we are all losing sight of the big picture, especially me! Its not so much about what foods produce gas and what don't, its about becoming stable and being able to digest all foods (within the guidelines). So we lower our stress levels, we drink lots of water, we excercise, we eat sensibly, we stabilise (HOPEFULLY!!) and we are able to tolerate a wide range of foods without bloat and gas. That sounds wonderful! Now where's the magic pill to help us all do this... hee hee

Thanx again Little Minnie for opening my eyes back up again.
