I finally started taking Calcium supplement. I have Osteoporosis and have no choice now. I took two Citrical,250's after dinner. It is causing loud unruly gas, I am so glad no one is here with me. A rumbling in my tummy and gut. What am I going to do now? I am afraid to take one in the morning and one at night, just afraid of gas. I am going to my sister tomorrow, my nephew is in the Air Force and we are having dinner with him and his wife before he has to leave. I surely dont want to be farting all over the place, . Guess I wont take it in the morning. I need it, but now I am afraid of it. What to do? Any suggestions?

Maybe you could try a different kind of calcium? Citrical is calcium citrate if I remember correctly. Why don't you try something with calcium carbonate?

And find calcium is bad for my tummy. So, I am not taking it. I need too though because my bones are like an 80 year olds per the dexa scan.

I always read, and my doctor told me that calcium citrate is gentler on the system, but carbonate gives you better calcium absorption. So you have to choose. I myself will probably try the citrate form again if I ever get the C under control! Calcium is constipating so no way will I take it now when zelnorm and colace won't even help.

I am scared because I need to take something for the bones, but I am scared because my GI system is already hurting so badly. The bone specialist wants me to go on an osteoporosis drug, not fosonex but something similar that starts with an A...but again these meds are suppose to be hard on the GI system. She gave me the script like 2 months ago and I still haven't filled it out of fear...waiting for the tummy to get better. But now, I don't think there will ever be a "safe" time to take it, as I think my IBS will always be bad. I don't know what to do about the osteoporosis because that scares me too. The doctor told me I am really in trouble with it and if I don't start treatment soon, I run big risks!

Keep me updated on what you decide to do and how it goes for you. Please

Beth, take the actonel. My bones are almost to the point of flaking. When he told me that I was so shocked, I could not believe it. I take the actonel on monday morning, I am also a C, it has not bothered me at all. I have to start on the calcium, so, I guess I will try the carbonate. Maybe I will react differently to it. I hope so, I am really scared about this.

Do you exercise? He told me to get out and start exercising and stick to it, soooo, I am trying to get started, as a matter of fact I walked today. We have to take care of our bones or we could find ourselves laying with a broken hip. not good, not good at all, and not an option for either one of us.

did you know there are liquid vitamins? sometimes the pharmacy keeps it behind the counter. I ordered some onetime for my mil over the net. think it might be an option for both of us. take care, glad to know I am not alone here.

Yes, it was Actonel she prescribed. So you don't have any GI effects from that? Drugs for osteoporosis are renowned for causing GI symptoms. And I tend to get symptoms from any drug. My psych put me on lexapro which is suppose to be very tolerable for everyone, and I get C from it. He told me only 1% of people get constipation from lexapro. So see what I mean! My body just doesn't like medication.

On that note, I know I need the actonel for all the reasons you listed. My bones are in bad bad shape and getting worse. My bone doc is surprised I haven't broken anything yet.

Why do we still need to take calcium on top of the Actonel? I don't know if my body could handle 3 drugs! Especially ones that cause C. I have tried citrate in the past, becausse it is gentler, but was immediately more C! I hate C! It hurts like heck.

I can't go out and walk now as I live in Chicago and it is freezing here unlike sunny Texas!

What type of liquid vitamin are you taking and why do we need that too! Meds are just so hard on my body Gigi. Anything I can skimp on, I will! What type and brand of vitamin is this? A liquid calcium or a multivitamin, and why is liquid better? Can anyone order it on line?

Thanks for sharing your story. Yes, it is nice to know I am not alone, and I have been ignoring this issue in my life for months now until I saw your post. Maybe God was showing me a sign, literally, to get my butt moving on this issue. Every time I see a lady all hunched over with the hump I cringe, because I know that is in my future. I can't under the damage that is already so advanced. I am so scared I am going to end up disabled with broken hips and hunched back and crippled. Many people, once they break the hips, need to go into nursing homes because they never can recover and they continue to break other bones and have a difficult healing.

Thanks again. I am so glad found someoneI can talk to about how to deal with osteoporosis meds and IBS symptoms. Right now I just can't put drugs into my body that I know are going to increase my IBS pain. But I need to. Oh, what to do?

Beth, the Actonel is a med to help treat and prevent post menopausal osteoporosis. This is how it works. Bone is a living tissue that is constantly renewing itself by taking away old bone and replacing it with new bone. Actonel helps ensure that cells do not take away bone faster than itis replaced. This helps protect your bones from fracture. (I just wrote this info. out of a pamplet I received from Actonel yesterday. OR, you can go to Actonel.com and read a little more about it.

I do not take Liquid Vitamins, I had ordered some for my mil. Just go to your search engine, type in Liquid Vitamins and you will find a plethora of info and places to order it.
I had ordered her the liquid calcium. You might ask your pharmacist, he might have some in the back, or he can probably order it for you. Let me know how that comes out.

I understand the weather problem, it is cold and rainy here today, so I won't be out doing much. In the heat of the summer, to go out and walk I have to wait until it is almost dark before I can stand to walk, just tooo darn hot for me. I have a couple of exercise videos, Richard Simmons dancing to the oldies is one of my favs, he and the people staring on the video are very motivating to me. I know a lot of people who use these. I need to get mine back out and plug it in, just moving around is better than nothing.

I hope I may have helped you Beth, , I hate to be C, it is very uncomfortable and painful. How long have you been taking the Colace? You poor girl, hugs and hugs to you Beth!!!

I took Citrical too, it also caused the problem. I am now taking Viactiv, you know, it comes in a purple carton. It is wrapped like candy, chewy caramel, thats my favorite flavor. It tastes pretty good, and has not (so far) upset my tummy. I got it at Wal Mart, but I am sure you could find it at any drugstore. Just my opinion.
