IBS brought on by antibiotics

Hi all,
Here's a question for you:
Have any out there actually developed IBS / Lactose
intolerance after having taken antibiotics (Cipro)?
I had to take Cipro this spring and seem to have
developed the IBS symptoms (and Lactose
intolerance) ever since. I started with C and then
the doctor recommended lots of fiber. Well, that
solved the C temporarily so I started looking for
ways to solve the C problem with diet. That's when
I discovered Heather's books & this website.
I had never had any of these issues before taking the
medication this past spring. Now, if I get some dairy
or have more fats than I realized I get D.
Anyone else out there have this problem?
Thanks,
Jenny

Hi! I can tell you that after a bout of something called C-diff(intestinal issue brought on by too many antibiotics back to back)I noticed I can no longer tolerate icecream, corn on the cobb and lettuce. I don't eat cream soups anymore and I try to limit my cream cheese and sour creams too. I've had IBS for 18 years and either I just suffered with those items prior to my c-diff bout or what but I now completely stay away from those. It's just not worth it!
Hope this helps.

It does a bit, I just find it strange that this all (IBS and lactose intolerance) started up after a round of Cipro. It's the only antibiotic I took, so it wasn't like
a big bout of a ton of different antibiotics.

If I recall Cipro is a major antibiotic that can cause major stomach upset and D. On my C-diff support group boards they list the antibiotics that can cause c-diff and Cipro is one of them. You'd be surprised the number of people who developed c-diff with only one round of antibiotics. Most are due to taking them after/before dental procedures too. I'm not saying you have c-diff(cause you'd know it)I'm just saying it can only take 1 round of an antibiotic and depending on other circumstances in your system that might be going on, it just could have intensified things. You may be able to start having milk products again in time. Wait a few months and try introducing them to your body again.
Because I had c-diff once, I can never have antibiotics again without the risk of the c-diff coming back! I stress over that all the time!!!

If antibiotics caused your symptoms then you may benefit from taking a probiotic to help your stomach recover. I don't know one personally but do a search on the boards, ask your doctor or local health food store.

Thanks! I'll ask my doctor tomorrow. I was so disgusted
with my intestines today that I just caved and called. There
must be something that can be done. One thing, I know she'll be happy that I've lost weight! The bonus of the
IBS diet.

Thanks for the heads up. My doctor hadn't mentioned the
possibility of anything like that but I made an appointment
not long after your message. I'm hoping that there is
something she can do that will help. Thanks again!
All of the advice is going to prove helpful at my visit
tomorrow.

Jenny, Interesting you should make that connection with antibiotics and your symptoms. Some doctors now believe that antibiotics introduce a fungus into your body which when allowed to develop over time will mimic symptoms of IBS. Maybe an antifungal diet would work??

I would buy the non-dairy start pack by Natren and do the full month they recommend, these are expensive but you only need to do them the once to replenish what you have lost, after that you should switch to a more broad spectrum brand to keep things on tract and enhance immunity, new chapter all-flora are great , i personally swear by garden of life primal defense, but it is also a bit expensive, jarrow is also a good brand.goo dluck.

i am convinced that my lifelong ibs started after the years of antibiotics i was given for my chronic ear infections as a child, since my ibs started around age 6. An anti-candida diet could be a way to go if you believe yeats overgrowth, however it contradicts heathers diet as it cuts out all refined flours, mushrooms (anything fermented) and all sugar and high sugar fruits like bananas and mangoes. so its technically the anti heather diet, but it sure wipes out candida, you do the diet while taking probiotics and a candida cleanse such as innovites yeast busters kit, it gets rave reviews from docs and customers at the HFS i work at.
Just some extra info.
