I need help - Do I have IBS?

Since January 8th I have not been going to the bathroom like normal. My first doctor thought that it could be a "bug" in the gut- he prescribed metroniadazole which tamed it, and brought me back to normal... but upon stopping that treatment my diarrhea/loose stool came back. I went back to him, and he didn't want to prescribe it again.

After a stool test and blood test, everything came back normal and I was still having the same problem. I was referred to a specialist who believed that I had IBS, but couldn't diagnose it until I have a colonoscopy. He told me to sit tight... did a second stool test and everything was normal. We then tried a second round of metroniadazole which seemed to help but not get rid of the symptoms.

I couldn't deal, so I went to a great doctor at UCLA med center who is now recommending a colonoscopy to rule out other things.

I noticed that my symptoms tend to react to what I eat- if I eat a salad, have an alcolholic drink, or things like this, my symptoms get worse. If I eat safe foods, I can somewhat control the symptoms- but my stool is still broken up, thin, or just not right looking.

I have had no other serious symptoms, no serious pain aside from the discomfort of using the bathroom 2-3 times a day.

I need an opinion from some people who have experience personally dealing with this. Your help is greatly appreciated.

It's very hard to say unless you have all the tests and rule everything else out. When is your colonoscopy scheduled? I would advise starting to read all you can from this site (not the boards...read the left of the home page...all about the diet and sf/if supplements and HOW to eat along with what to eat/not eat.) At least while you're awaiting your tests, you can see if it makes a difference. By the way, I have IBS-d AND microscopic colitis but all the meds for th colitis have done nothing to help as much as the info. I have learned here so you never know. Good luck and in the future, you might want to post on the Eating for IBS Board, as that is a busy board where you might get more responses. Welcome aboard.
